MSA July/August 2018 - "Chrome"

Hi Folks.

As a first time winner, I am honoured to choose the next MSA.

I've had a think and come up with a few ideas, but one specifically stuck, based on what I have previously liked to photograph (I'm on a bit of a break from that subject matter for a while - time to renew the batteries).

Anyhow, I present to you the July/August 2018 MSA:

"CHROME"

Photograph and display something where Chrome is an obvious highlight (all puns intended) of the photograph - it doesn't need to take up the whole frame, but it needs to be focus of attention.

Now, obviously, it’s going to be hard for me to determine that the chrome image you have taken, is indeed the real deal, so if it’s a chrome look in an application that you would expect to see chrome, then it counts (For example, highly polished aluminium and stainless steel would be OK, but brushed steel finishes, mirrors or water reflections wouldn't fit the brief).

Classic cars and motorcycles are good choices, but a lot of mid century and modern design also feature chrome.

Examples where you might find chrome: Cars and Motorcycles. Household appliances. Building fixtures. Even a simple pen. Look around you and find something that is hard and shiny!

OK, now for the copy and paste bits:

The normal rules are that all photos need to be taken no earlier than the beginning of the MSA period - July 1, 2018 and on.
A reminder that we continue to operate this "Assignment" with "analogue" constraints. If you are going to be doing any manipulations, they need to be "APUG" type manipulations - done with either light, camera, darkroom tools or physical manipulations - no digital manipulation.

Great theme Hoffy! It’s very “you”. That said, I hope to photograph a few things for this assignment (and upload them - I always seem to run out of time to scan the images I take for these assignments!).

Hey, its not about ME stepping outside of my comfort zone!

That being said, the MSA is something I have often looked at, but never really did anything about. I hope to change that, as I need to breath some new life into my photography.

When I saw this month’s theme I became quite excited, as I have many bags of chrome in the form of vintage golf irons that still get used from time to time. Featured is an early 1960’s MacGregor Tourney long iron.

Interesting interpretation of this Months Assignment.
So you shot some Chrome, an image as well as hitting a golf ball with it.
Now can you tell us the best 'shot' you made with this #2, .. on the golf course?

Greetings! Without digressing too far on a tangent about golf- I like to take this set of irons out to play a very short little nine hole course located in a State Park, in Lockhart, Texas. This particular iron is my club of choice off the tee on three holes; one of which is a 180 yard par three that most always plays into the wind. Earlier this spring, on such such a windy day, I put the ball to tap-in distance on that par three.

Golf clubs such as this are to me the "film cameras" of the sport- seemingly obsolete for most who play the modern, high-tech equipment game, but a treasure to a few of us who still like to hit the ball making "manual exposures".

My first go, unless I dont come up with anything else in which it will be the only go .
35mm dense hp5 neg taken the weekend before last. Darkroom print on old ilford rcvc iii 8x10 paper. was a 240 min base exposure split between number 1 and 4.5 contrast filters and a -3/4 stop dodge of the horn to get it to pop out a little, dodge was a little way would....dont look too hard.

Ok..I have to submissions; one a bit ordinary and the other unusual.

The first is a picture where I estimated the focus distance and dropped the camera to bumper level without looking through the viewfinder. It's weird and out of focus but I kind of liked it.

The next picture is more ordinary but I did like it because of the multiple reflections going on in the different pieces of chrome.

Both taken with my FE2, Nikkor 20mm f/3.5 UD lens with HP5 dev'd in HC110B and printed on Adorama Glossy paper at 8x10 and scanned.

I'm having trouble finding chrome that's not part of a car or truck... last night we saw a pristine 1956 T-bird but I didn't have a camera with me ... still got my eyes open though!

Taken in a local diner. Chrome chairs really looked pretty in the light. Used a Rolleiflex and XP2. I had a client buy a large print of this and then remodelled their entire kitchen to compliment the image. I guess the image doesn't qualify for the MSA as it was taken a few years ago, but wanted to share it anyway.

Cool! The cars out the window look like a few years ago.
I went to a real art deco old club in the "old town" part of Santa Rosa, which used to have a lot of chromed fittings and details, but it has been recently remodeled.
