MSA July/August 2017 "Pareidolia"

Hi all.
This is my first time at hosting the comp (thank you Sly), so let me know if this has been done before or not appropriate.
Its just a bit of fun that requires just a little imagination and a little technique. Pareidolia is seeing faces, animals or things in other objects, elephants in clouds, Bob Hope profile on the side of a mountain, or a face on a post, lots of them around if you look. Its also OK to manipulate your subject, smiley face in your latte, rearrange your daily medication to look like a caterpillar, cut your cornflake to look like your favorite cartoon character. Take photo of your garden hose and call it a snake....I dont know, surprise me. Just keep it family friendly.

Godzilla

I thought it was my monster inlaw, but someone thought it was more like a jet crashing into a sea horse.

Tree laying down, or swimming.

Scream.

A reminder that if you are going to be doing any manipulations, they need to be "APUG" type manipulations - done with either light, camera, darkroom tools or physical manipulations - no digital manipulation.
The normal rules are that all photos need to be taken no earlier than the beginning of the MSA period - July 1, 2017 on. I'll post a question about that later in the thread.

Great idea Paul/awty.
Using my special limited moderator's super powers, I've added a couple of points to your initial post, including a reference to the MSA guidelines.
I do have a question about your reference to "manipulation". Do you intend to allow things like darkroom or other manipulations that combine two or more images (ala Jerry Uelsmann), or are you just referring to moving things around in the scene before releasing the camera's shutter?
I'll make this thread a "Sticky".

I'd never heard that term before.
Here's an interesting page. Not mentioned on that page, there is also a "profile rock" near the summit of Mt. Tamalpias. I'm going to try to find my own interpretation of this MSA instead of one that's already known...

Hi Matt.
You can use what ever means are at your disposal (except evil digital editing beyond whats allowed for in your list of rules), its all about using your imagination, creativity and having fun. I just gave some basic examples to encourage every one to have a go.

Never seen Jerry Uelsmann work before, great pictures.

This looks like fun! I'm sure I can come up with an entry for this one. I thought I had the perfect entry, but alas the piece of wood it was on was part of the picnic table we got rid of this spring due to rotted wood. It was a striking resemblance to "Sid" from the Ice Age movies. So I'll have to come up with something else.

For those who are new, here are some rules for the MSA:

* All images must be taken between July 1st and August 31th 2017.
* The image must be made analogue: no computer enhancements, digital internegatives, etc. allowed.
* There really is no problem with correcting out those scanning introduced unwanted elements, but no other Photoshop tinkering please.
* You can post the results here and in the MSA Gallery not later than August 31th.
* After that date the entries will be judged and a winner will be announced.
* The winner may host the next MSA.
* You can find all (there was a url link here which no longer exists).

"Starfish" - lumen print.

[for the pedantic - I meant this to be snowflakes, but decided they looked more like seastars. Most stars are 5 limbed, but there is a small 6-limbed one in local tide pools.]

Of what ever it is. I'm an old desert rat... so these are actually star fish? .. Never seen anything like this... even when gotten to the beach.
Just lovely... boy this assignment is going to be a neat challenge!

Hi Peter - they are fern fronds. I don't think a seastar would survive a lumen print. Given that they are just starting to recover from a massive die-off a few years ago, I wouldn't sacrifice one for art, not even the MSA.

Of course ... having never done a lumen print, not familiar with the 'look', so your going to make me finally Experiment.. haha..
Tried to make a pin hole camera out of an old shoddy 2x3 Speed for the last assignment you set up, but just didn't complete the do.
Now we have two hiccups on the photo wall list to complete.

Just two? Yep, .. my wife's Honey Due List is from memory only, and therefore we can have a senior moment.

Wow! that was quick. They are what ever you say they are, its all about using your imagination, no wrong or right, maybe a starfish amongst some snow flakes and your Lumen looks great. Well done.

I thought the first was a Peahen perched on a rock, next to a boy who has just lost his head...poor fella.
The second is defiantly a toad fish one end and Elvira having a bad hair day on the other end.

Tree bark: I see (from left to right in the green areas): a little dog with a black nose, two people fighting on top of a mountain, a Japanese woman in Kabuki costume and finally a clown leaning forward with big clown shoes. If you look carefully, you will see them too!
