MSA Jan / Feb 2020 - ''Heimat / Homeland''

Though I'm not the winner of our MSA Nov/Dec 2019, Peter asked me to bring up the theme for MSA Jan/Feb 2020.

The theme for MSA Jan/Feb 2020 is ''Heimat / Homeland''

Heimat is often translated to "home" or "homeland" but there’s no exact English equivalent.

Heimat usually refers to a relationship between man and space (territory).
In common parlance it is applied to the place into which a person is born and in which the earliest socialisation experiences take place or where someone originated or were nurtured in their early existence, which initially shape identity, character, mentality, attitudes and world views .
It also has a special relationship to the concept of "settlement"; in contrast to the place of residence, this usually refers to a sedentary way of life, i.e. a permanent or long-term settling down and living in a place or regio.

Heimat has various dimensions - temporal, social, cultural and emotional dimensions.

I would like to see what your 'Heimat' looks like - show us your photographs. Have fun !

Just an example for 'Heimat' :
This photograph does not show my home; it's captured in a small cabin behind the IJsselmeer dike in the Netherlands, where my friend Johann ('Han') lives.
It's a place where I often spend my time - just to slow down, to talk with friends or to take photograhs - it's a place that I call 'Heimat'.

Me and my wife bought an old log cabin year ago. It was made in 1890’s, and it’s first dwellers were poor crofters Juho and Amanta. Finland was developing country in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Main religion was christianity, but old habits die hard and relics of animistic religion remained. Land – homeland – was filled with religious content. One had to keep spirits of the land satisfied or something bad could happen.

That pine is one of the reasons why we bought the house. It’s very large and impressive. My father has worked with trees half a century and he thinks it could be 300-400 years old. There’s quite big and deep hole in it, and someone has carved it even deeper. Father estimated that it could have been done over a century ago. I believe the tree could have been holy tree. In other words I think it was important part of Juho’s and Amanta’s experience of being in the world – one of the things that made that piece of land their homeland. I’m not religious person, but that kind of things have special meaning for me too. Place without history feels shallow.

I shot this picture on self made 13x18 cm gelatine dry plate. It’s from the first batch which I made last month. And this is the first print I’ve made from them. One of the two buildings in lower left corner is my darkroom. This is the second negative I’ve printed there. We have owned the place for only a year now, but already it plays an important role in our lives. It’s not an easy place to be (especially in winter) but it has really started to grow on us.

@Marttiko Thank you for this entry - I really love the photograph and I enjoy your writing very much ! That's exactly what I thought of when I chose the theme.

Thanks! There was troubles with packaging. Emulsion wasn't dry enough when I wrapped the plate in paper. Some of it peeled off when I unwrapped it and that's why there are those big black areas. But I kind of like that.

macfred, maybe not quite a native speaker as I have never heard you speak English but as far as expressing yourself in written English then you are as native as most of us "natives" .

Dang the light was so dim, didn't quite get the 4x5 speed on the table in the shot. And yes the firer is lit and burning, but no show @ 8sec time exposure.
BTW, do you see the hidden home development brew?
Ha... We developed in our camper, so developer, water with fixer and photo flow warming up behind the chair, as the camper itself is warming up with the heater turned on.

About the same... I've been working on my sketching and not on my photography, but this is a great topic.

On this place I am "Home" in my "Heimat". On the table a photo of my wife and I.
Linhof 4X5" F22 - 8 sec daylight, ADOX sheetfilm classic emulsion iso 100 asa as iso 200 asa in HC110 dill B, 9 minutes.
Next week I try to go to the Isle Goeree-Overflakkee where I was borne and grow-up in a very small town.
(I always need a Google translation, sorry!!!)

I rember Goeree-Overflakkee from cycling the LF-1 Noordzeeroute on my way to France. I stayed on a Mini Camping in Ouddorp.

Yesterday I was on the island Goeree-Overflakke where I was borne in a very small town. There was and is still Dutch/Flakkee dialect, land, water and birds, calmness, silence, clarity, simplicity.
Where my dad asked my mother. Later after a move I made my vacationstravels to there with diesel tram "moordenaar" ("the killer") and boat,
And in the evening you heard outside in the dark... NOTHING, only the beating church bell. hmmm my roots where I feel at home, my homeland - Heimatland...
