The theme for the month of April is supposed to be trees.

I’m not even sure if we've covered this topic before for the MSA - at first glance I could not find anything.

I love photographs of trees and have tried my hand at it many times. However, I have to admit that I'm never really satisfied with my results ... I'm looking forward to seeing your photos and collecting inspiration.

Please show me winter trees, black & white trees, colorful trees, reflection of trees, shadows of trees, old trees, young trees, survivor trees, desert trees, close-up trees ... Have fun !

Submissions can be OLD prints/negatives that were taken earlier in the year (or prior)
Submissions can be NEW prints/negatives taken during this month

For the updated MSA guidelines :

@matt : If I forgot something to say, please help me out !

I can't resist to add three of my own attempts ...

Bertus! It's so nice to see you back here - I always look forward to your photographs.

Macfred - Great subject for the assignment - I think I have in my archives that I can post, since my scanner is not working (nor has been for some time).

I have too many to choose from.
The only thing I would add is that the images can, of course, also be from slides.

Thanks for choosing this great theme, macfred!

Trees have become my most photographed subject over the years. Specifically, tree bark is what I use to test lenses for sharpness and contrast. And the fixed 50mm f2 Solinar lens on my Ansco Super Regent passes the test for me. This is old, from last November, taken with Ilford FP4 and developed in HC110.(B).

Here some OLD submissions:

In 2020, we had a big fire come through. I got some sad, but interesting shots in the area. Within a month or so, everything (except some of the trees) started recovering. These were taken with an Exakta VX w/ CZJ 58mm f2 Biotar on Fomapan 200, HC110

Not all my tree pics are of burnt trees! This was taken with a Fujica ST 705w w/ Zeiss Ultron 50mm f1.8 on ADOX CHS 100 II dev in ADOX FX-39 II

Finally (I have tons of tree pictures, but do not want to overwhelm), this has the same specs as above (camera, lens, film, etc.), but taken in a different place and time (may have been the same overall trip.

So my first point of call is from my gallery submissions. First set is from my last trip to Cambodia (hard to believe that was 10 years ago). All shot on infrared film, but printed on different papers and/or toned, accounting for the different effects:

Stranglehold: Ta Som Temple, Efke IR (aura) film
stranglehold_apug.jpg

Wat Remains: Ta Prohm, HIE film, bleached back and sepia toned to get rid of grey cast from extremely fogged film, on regular RC paper
wat_remains_web.jpg

Ta Prohm 1: Also HIE, also bleached and sepia toned for the same reasons as above, printed on Ilford Art 300, giving more "bite" to the texture of the stones.

Any reason why so many trees were trimed (forest fires) etc.,?

These are willows that are pruned for landscape maintenance. The trunks are shortened as a young tree at a height of about 1 to 3 meters and their branches are subsequently pruned regularly.
In Europe these willows are called 'pollard willows' / Kopfweide.

On the cut surface, the tree treated in this way sprouts new shoots in large numbers. These canes can be easily reached and cut for economic use (basket weaving).

New, just 2 days ago. It's difficult to find anything called winter trees here in Tucson, Arizona. Pentax MV, 50 2 lens, Tri-X in F76, straight scan right now, unknown type of tree.
