Mounting Lenses

Does anyone know of a west coast (US) place that will mount LF lenses on lensboards? Or should I send it to Grimes. Anyone done business with them after Steve's passing?

I've done business with them!

All right, all I did was to buy a lens spanner. But believe me, they're still in business. All the competence didn't die with Steve - nor did the courtesy. If I were on the same continent, they would see a lot of business from me.

Do you have a lensboard? Is it drilled for the size shutter on the lens?
Why can't you mount the lens to the board?

Maybe I'm missing something, but it's very simple to mount a lens to a lensboard. I've done my own, never thought about sending it to anybody.

S. K. Grimes is still in business, even if Steve's not. They charge $15 to drill a lensboard, and if you don't have the right flange or retaining ring, they can supply one for an additional fee.

That said, I can't believe no one in SF can drill a lensboard. One of the pro shops like Gasser's should be able to advise you, if they don't do it themselves. Is Jim Galvin (of Galvin 2x3 camera fame) on the West Coast? He advertises regularly in _View Camera_ magazine and does LF machine work.

The lensboard isn't drilled yet, and I am missing a retaining ring. I'll investigate my options.

This is for that Turner Reich in a Betax somethingorother? Call or email www.mpex.com. They may have a flange (shutters like that use a flange that screws to the front of the board, rather than a retaining ring that goes behind the board). If not, S. K. Grimes can make a new one, and probably has them on hand.

Ahha! Didn't know that. Just talked with the Grimes folks, they can do everything for $50 plus shipping. Only bummer is that they have a one month black log.

Try Frank Marshman, 800-471-8133. He mounts all lenses for me, for Emmet Gowin, and for many other noted photographers. We're perfectionists and he is, too. He is also great with shutters, but does not do optics--taking lenses apart and things like that.

Thanks for the tips folks. For the time being, I have ordered thge flange from the Grimes folks, and will mount it myself to 0ne of my home made boards. Eventually I will end up sending it in for a proper cla and haver an X terminal installed.
