Mouning onto something that isn't mount board

Hello,
So I got my first dry mount press yesterday, and an idea popped into my head while I was looking at the exuberent prices of mount board at my local art store. Basically I was wondering if anyone on here uses cardboard or anything similar to mount their prints. Yes I am aware that this will not be archival, and yes I am aware that many of you will scoff at my thoughts. I'm not saying that I necissarily will do this, I was merely just curious to find out if anyone mounts alternatively .

Retail stores seem to be very expensive places to buy mount and mat boards. But there are alternative places from which to buy archival mount board online. I buy all of mine from Dick Blick Art Supply at very reasonable prices for full size sheets.

Ya I gather that, it is about $10.80 a sheet of normal eggshell type stuff here. Anyways, just mounted one of my prints onto cardboard for fun, I like the look. Too bad it wont last long... especially since I mounted a fiber print on it. Oh well...Mount board looks nicer anyways, but this is a good alternative for casual work.

Don't scoff too much at the idea of cardboard. There are plenty of pretty archival cardboard materials that are less expensive than matt board. Take a look at the same material that archival boxes are made of at University Products for example. I would have said Light Impressions, but they are horrible now.

Well this wasn't an archival cardboard. It was acctually the cardboard that Ilford uses in their 11x14 paper envelopes to keep the paper from getting bent.

Yup, that is probably not archival.

On the other hand if you are doing something for the short term it is less expensive to make another print than buy matt board. For some reason matt board is more expensive than silver paper.
