Welcome to Photo. Sorry about the problem. Ruins a pretty good photo.

What format is this? How old is it, and how was it stored? If 120, it can be mottling due to backing paper, but that problem was fixed by Ilford a while back.

Hi Alex, thanks for your response its 120. I thought maybe it could be that. It did expire in 2022 but it was stored in the fridge. Developer was Rodinal 1:50

The mottling may have more to do with humidity or moisture than expiration date.

I believe the recommendation for using film out of the fridge is to wait an hour or two before putting it in the camera.

Ilford/Harman has adressed the problem on this web-site ( enclosed ) .

Also, film should be kept in the wrap. I've seen quite a few rolls where wrap was removed and stored without it.

I'm also using large ziplock bags for a number of rolls as a precaution when storing in the fridge/freezer.
Bags will preserve the outer packaging.
