The 8008/8s as well if I recall correctly. Didn't need to go to Nikon, authorized service centers could do it as well. I was quoted $20 at a Dallas shop in the 90's, never got around to it.

Some Nikon cameras can be modified for a nominal charge by a Nikon service center to stop the rewind with the leader left out. Now that I think about it, I seem to remember that the Data Link can be used to program this feature.

The Nikon N90s/F90x could be modified with a custom program to leave the leader out. I had this done on my Nikon N90s at a local (Tucson) camera repair center that was an authorized Nikon repair facility. I suppose any present camera repair center with the proper knowledge could do this today.
