Hi you all,
I'm proud to be chosen by Rachelle in the previous MSA as the next person to host this new MSA for November-December 2014.

I (Twinbert-1) had a good chat with Twinbert-2 (=Bertus) about choosing a theme. Ideas like "Going Dutch" came up (we're both Dutch you know) but were rejected in the end.

Finally I got back to what photography is/could be/should be in essence - at least to me. I often end my emails to other photographers with the wish: "Have fun and catch that light beam". And as Twinbert-2 often says: "Photography is writing with light".

So the new theme will be:

"How to catch a light beam".

You're free to explore this theme in any analogue way possible. Your imagination is your only limit.

If need be, here are some suggestions (in no particular order):

* how do you personally "write with light"?
* you can make a portrait, using split lightning, like Rembrandt did in his paintings.
* you can catch that single ray of light through the dark clouds on a stormy day or at sunset.
* photograph the eye of a hurricane (disclaimer: better watch The Perfect Storm first).
* watch for that sprinkle of light in the eye of a newborn baby or of an elder person in his last days.
* make a nice "pictorialism aera" image, like they did about 100 years ago.
* or just show us that single image, made perfect by an unpredictable light leak.
* or registering the light of a star trail after traveling so many years through outer space.
* show us how in your eyes someone is "the light of the world" as meant in Matthew 5:14 (and the salt of the world as well, but that was already in a previous MSA).
* catch that small ray of light with a long time exposure of a pinhole camera.
* since the Christmas days are included in this MSA period: show us the real light of Christmas coming into this world.
* make a light painting with a torch at night.
* show us the lights of Autumn.
* and don't forget to have fun in the process ...

Just amaze us with your interpretation.

If you're new to the MSA, (there was a url link here which no longer exists).

Most importantly:
1) The image itself must be made between November 1st and December 31st, 2014.
2) The image must be made with some sort of analogue contraption, sometimes called a camera (i.e. non-digital).

That sounds really interesting! I love abstract ideas. If I can find the time I will definitely participate.

Totally going for the eye of a tornado thing. Sounds perfectly safe!

Being there: yes! But getting there, ...
At least bring a Pentax 67 with zoom lens in a Dead Link Removed case and you'll have a perfect anchor as well.

I'm going to try standing in front of a train to get the headlight beam.

I think we're getting the hang of the "have fun" part already.

That, and a claw hammer should do. Maybe some duct tape, just to be safe.

It's customary to give an example, I believe, so here is one I made about 8 years or so ago:

image009.jpg (Hallway in a church, Maastricht, The Netherlands)

The purple ray of light isn't a light leak but a real flash of light through a window in a dark hallway.
Made with an old Gevabox (6x9) I rebuild into a pinhole camera, Fuji Superia Xtra 400 Asa, exposure 60 seconds.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention:

1) Please tell us what, where, how and why you photographed.

2) Please post an image here for all to see and in the (there was a url link here which no longer exists) as well. To be able to post in the Gallery, you must be a (there was a url link here which no longer exists), what is a good cause in itself.

Can someone please enLIGHTen me as to how to post an image in the thread?
(As I've mentioned before, posting side by side in the gallery seems to be the fairest and fastest way to enter the MSA.)
Thank you!

I post there but feel that being able to add a bigger image in the thread allows more impact than the tiny 850 size image in the gallery.

I think we should post in both.

As to how, if you are a subscriber, you go to your profile, and click "see more images" or "more images by [YOUR NAME HERE]"

Then click upload new image button which is in one of the 4 corners of the screen, then you have to know where the image is in your computer and find and select it, then that's it essentially, follow the on screen prompts to add details about the image like film type and print paper, developer, whatever you want and proceed to follow the on screen selections and click next or upload or whatnot.

That wasn't EXACTLY perfect, but try it and see how far you get.

Hi Barbara Ann!

It's easy to attach pictures to the thread.

If you use the space at the bottom of the thread to post in the thread, you need to click the button that says 'Go Advanced'. When you do, scroll to the bottom and there's another button that says 'Manage Attachments'.
When you click that button a new window opens, and I think it will be self explanatory from there on.

OR, you can also click on the little symbol in the menu bar right above where you type to post that looks like a tree on a projector screen (third from the right). You can then upload an image to the post from your computer or you can reference an image stored elsewhere (even here on APUG in your gallery, on Flickr, etc).

Should I understand that non-subscribers are implicitly excluded from this MSA (I've read in posts on more than one occasion the insistence images to be posted in the MSA Gallery instead of here) ?

Of course not. It's just encouragement for you, and other members that have not taken the leap, to join as a subscriber.

Don't get me wrong. Anyone is most welcome to post here in this thread. Subscribers can also post in the gallery.
That's all.
Besides that I simply encourage anyone to consider to support this wonderfull non-commercial forum, if you can afford it. But no obligation what so ever!!

Thanks to you and to Thomas Bertilsson for dispelling the slight confusion.

How to post in a thread

Thanks to all who tried to explain to me how to post an entry into the thread. Seeing that every one's explanation was different, I am now totally confused. (Anyway, compared to posting in the gallery, they were all too labor intensive. I do this for fun and to motivate me to take photos, not to complicate my life!)
So I will continue to post in the gallery only. If this disqualifies me from the competition, so be it...

Stone, what do you mean by the "tiny 850 size image in the gallery" ? When I click on the thumbnails, they enlarge to a BIG image on my screen. Much bigger, actually that those posted in the thread. So, I'm confused...

Hi barbara ann:

If you would like one of us to copy any of your images from the Gallery to the thread, just ask:wink:

In the galleries themselves the images are limited to a certain size, in the thread here they are not as limited.

That's what I mean.

I think later I will try and give you a step by step picture explanation.

Hi Barbara Ann,

I have attached a step by step instruction to this reply. It's a PDF, which you should be able to open and read.

It's not that difficult. Let me know if you need further assistance.

Oh my goodness - thank you MattKing, Stone and Thomas B. for trying to help me get my act together! Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
I am working on "catching a light beam" and when I have something to contribute, I'll give it another try!
You guys are the best! :kissing:
