Nov / Dec ::
So the Nov /Dec assignment was not exactly a raging success  ... so Blansky is off the hook for the judging and I guess we'll try again.

Going Forward :
Picking up on some things that were mentioned in the last set of suggestions, I'd like to suggest that for Jan 2007 we should look a bit bigger. It was suggested that we rarely look at landscapes when we do these sorts of projects, so part of the MSA will be landscapes. Transportation was also suggested as was the subject of parallels.

The Next Assignment
So, the MSA subject for Jan 2007 will be parallels in a landscape/cityscape setting with extra merit (brownie points) given for including transportation as part of the scene. The landscape setting doesn't have to be a "grand" landscape, but it must be a long or wide view
Remember that "landscapes" don't necessarily have to be just nature. They can include city scenes also as long as it's a long, wide, or long and wide view taken from a long distance.

This theme runs for January and February and the next theme will start in March.

Any questions?? Please ask.

Remember that the person selected (by me) as having submitted the photo most representative of the theme gets to pick and judge the next theme.

cheers

John,

great to see a new assignment. Not that there was anything wrong with the previous one... but...

I'll try to get the previous assignment out of my head and think about the new one. At least it sounds more up my alley than the previous (no offence meant, Blansky, the idea was great, I just didn't get round to daring to do it).

it must be a long or wide view

View. View. You're only talking about the view, right? I mean, a landscape in the sense you mentioned can be done in a square format and still have a long or wide view, right?

Yes, you are correct. The format is not in question at all. It can be square, rectangular or even round if you wish .

While waiting for the bus yesterday I was inspired to work on this. I took a couple of shots with my Canon G7 and liked what I saw. Brought my Mamiya 7II to work today with the 45mm lens and got a some 6x7s while few folks were around. Hopefully they'll turn out and I will have a submission for this one.

I like this assignment much more better! :D

Want to check the archives (is that okay?) as well as consider new shots.

I guess "landscapes" have a bad rep because they're more likely to be snapshot-like than A.Adams "creations".

But, heck, us snapshotters gotta get a few crumbs off the floor once in a while too!

BTW: Please remind me again how we submit our pics? Just to this thread?

Hmmm .... there's no rules that I know of from previous threads, but I think it was kinda' assumed that we'd go out and make a photo for the event? I hope that's ok.

The pic's can be posted to the MSA gallery here : (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

An example photo

Please excuse the dirt dust and what-not that the scanner passed along. (For this example, I just put the negative on a flatbed scanner and then inverted it, so it's all out of focus and dusty to boot) The attached photo is NOT an entry, just a negative from last fall that illustrates the sort of photo wanted for this session.

It's a landscape with parallel train tracks

(landscape ..... parallel ...... transportation)

cheers

No problem, John. I can live with that.

Besides, as Valerie points out, it will get me to rouse out of my winter slumber (although not much winter here this year) and get out to do some shooting!

Did Early Riser get advance warning of this (I know there may be no transportation in this one):D ?

Hi Matt,

Actually, it looks like there is a road just beyond the trees (see the black line) and arguably the telephone poles can carry data and so form part of the "information superhighway"!

Of course, if he submits this the rest of us are "dead meat"! :surprised:

Michael:

It was the timing.

Photographs of people smiling, and laughing, near Christmas????

Maybe try again, around when taxes are due!

Ok folks,

We're half way thru' January so only six weeks left.

The theme is parallels in landscapes with extra (brownie  ) points for including transportation content.

At the end of February I'll pick what I think is the most theme representative photo and that victim ..... err umm person will choose and judge the next theme (if they wish).

get 'em posted !!

cheers eh?

I'd like to take part but don't know the submission guidelines. Please bring me up to date.

Btw, when I ran across this thread I was just previously thinking about a $1 contest between us.

I would encourage a virtual flood of entries - as many as you can make and post. There is no limit.

The submission guidlelines are ::

The photo must be a "distance" shot - no closeups or street scenes, no indoor scenes etc. I am using the word "landscape", but long distance shots done in cityscapes are fine as well. There must be some "parallel" elements in the scene somewhere and extra points are given for having some sort of "transportation" theme included. Any format is fine and any type of film camera is ok - homemade, pinhole, 35mm, LF, MF, Polaroid transfers - I don't care - if it's film and takes a picture - use it!!
Here's a (technically very poor) example : (there was a url link here which no longer exists) for you.
Once the end of Feb is reached, I will pick the victim (winner  ) and that person may choose to lead the next round.

I hope this is an ok explanation - please ask if you have any questions.

cheers eh?

PS : i am a very lenient judge ... this is for FUN after all ...

So your requesting a scan posted to a portfolio?

There's a gallery dedicated to the Monthly Shooting Assignment (MSA) and it can be found here : (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

Any scans made for the MSA should be posted to the MSA gallery.

I think that's what you were asking? (I can be a bit thick sometimes )

cheers

I've placed one of the ones I wanted to submit for this out in the Gallery. The scan doesn't catch some of the building detail that I think is in the negative so I'll work on that. Still fun to play with.

Just posted the one that I wanted to submit right off. Not an outside pic, but fits all other criteria nicely. I couldn't find where to label camera and film, etc. Mamiya 7II, 50mm lens, Astia 100, negative scan. Shot this at 6:00AM so avoided anyone in the shot. Did have to answer some questions from a security guard as to what the heck I was doing with a camera in there.

Ok folks,

We've got a few great submissions for the MSA and there's still a month left, so get out there and take some photos and post them with everyone elses eh  ?

Once you get them, post them here : (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

Even if you're not playing along, stop by and have a look. Leave some comments and remember ... it's all for fun .

And ..... the poor unlucky slob that "wins" (yeah right ) gets to choose and pick the "winner" for the next round (March and April)

cheers

Down to the last two weeks... The weekend before last, I took some shots that (hopefully) fit the assignment. Now I have to find time to develop the rolls. I hope I can at least get a negative scan in before the deadline...

Ok folks, we have a bit les than a week left, so if anyone is holding out, now is the time to liberate that inner photo contest entry geek, join the ranks of those extroverts and/or exhibitionists who like to be exposed in a public place .... or at least who like to exhibit their photo work

Bottom line? ...... don't be shy .... post a photo in the Monthly Shooting Assignment gallery NOW !!
