1. How would halving or quartering the amount
of sulfite in D-23 affect its characteristics?
2. How would making the developer with no sulfite
at all affect the characteristics?
Less sulfite is possible but how less would depend on
how it is used. I use a modified D-23; 8 and 80 grams
of metol and sulfite. My actual batch size is 1/8 of that.
Good for two rolls of 120, 500ml each. So each roll,
1/2 gram metol and 5 grams sulfite. Dilution 1:7.
As the sulfite level drops below some level a loss of
activity will ensue. What that level is I know not.
The greater the dilution of any specific amount of
chemistry the longer will be the developing time.
How much time have you? For one 4x5, my
guesstimate 1/16 gram metol.
Metol without an activator is no developer.
If you wish to experiment with a least sulfite
developer and still maintain D-23's modest
activity use bicarbonate of soda. Dan
