My first exposure to modern Japanese work was Eikoh Hosoe. It was hard to understand, but I grew to love his work. I do say that most Japanese photographers work challenges the viewer.

i run hot and cold about his work, no middle ground... i find it attractive or uninteresting. I've ascribed my lack of interest to some of his work as "cultural" misunderstanding and moved on. your post has been the invitation to look further - thanks.

I'm with the OP on this.

Eikoh Hosoe's work is challenging to look at but also inspiring. Those modern guys haven't got much to go for themselves, rather nauseating of an experience typical of likes that will get shows at Saatchi etc...
Another dreadful one is momo okabe, good luck.

Besides, developing your film in hot dev isn't really a darkroom technique, rather a way to get reticulation.

That yokota guy doesn't do darkroom in fact, just scan and spew an inkjet. I dunno about the others but wouldn't hold my breath. YMMV
