I know I can answer this question by simply trying it, but will my modern Yongnuo Speedlite/Flash work on my 1970's vintage Minolta XD-11 or even my SRT202? If it will, are there any setting that I need to be aware of before using? BTW, the Speedlite is made to communicate with a Nikon camera. But I was thinking since it will be mounted on the hot-shoe, that it doesn't matter.

Ifthe Younguro has a single pin in the middle of the flash base that matches the pin on your Minoltas it should, at least on the 202, I think the XD11 is also single pin, by the 70s some cameras had moved to TTL flash with different pin set to allow the the cameras and flashes to communicate.

Yeah, the flash has 5 pins.

I know that the Minolta 200X was designed to work with the XD, but that is a direct forward facing flash. What would work well with the XD with an articulating head?

A new flash like the Younguo will work with the XD-11 but in fact it's a poorer choice than using an old flash (for example the Minolta Auto 320X which was designed for the XD-11) on a new camera like your D.... camera. The reason neither one would work on TTL mode but the old flash will have non TTL auto mode and most new flashes don't have that feature.

Thanks for the input. I bought a 320X on ebay for $17.95 shipped.

All of the stuff I couldn't afford to buy when I was 16 is now available for pennies on the dollar.

I have an XD-11, which is why I dropped in here. Glad I did -- just learned something. From the Rokkor Files:

Dead Link Removed

Nice looking flash. I've been using a Vivitar 283 on mine -- a real workhorse, but the 320x has a few features that the 283 lacks. Guess I'll have to go and look for one now . . . hmmm, some possibilities on
fleabay. Just what I don't need to do -- spend more money on camera gear.

As for the Yongnuo, it depends on the model. I have a YN560 IV that has only a single pin, so I'm thinking it would work correctly with older cameras -- metering the scene with its own circuitry to determine exposure. Unfortunately, I can't say for sure because mine is defective and does not work at all. With no warranty presence in the States, I'm stuck with it. (Bought it new, but it was on close-out, with no returns)

Oh, and by the way, you might be able to pick up a winder for your XD-11 for cheap like I did -- Auto Winder D, I believe it's called. Only 2fps, but at least I can keep my eye at the viewfinder when I use it.

Funny you should say that...I won an Autowinder D just last night for $10.95 including the case. Looks like it was never used.
