Model; "what's Film?"

Discussion over text message...

Me: "my digital camera got destroyed in hurricane sandy, l have to shoot you on B&W Film."

Model: "what's bandw?"

Me: "Black and White"

Model: "oh! What's film?"

Me: *jaw drop, palm to face* "film, like to take pictures"

Model: "Wait when u say film u mean like record?"

Me: "uhhh, like this..."

Me: "it's how they used to take pictures"

Model: "OHHHH! I gotcha...so...what does that mean?

Me; "Nothing really, it just won't be in color"

Model: "oh weird! Ok I guess..."

I feel like an antique... And I'm not even close to mid-life-crisis age...

I posted this in philosophy because I'd like to hear thoughts on this from a sort of philosophical view of age and life experiences.

You don´t have to feel like an antique because of this. I consider as general knowledge to know what a B&W film is. Rather the model should feel like a ... like a little bit ignorant ;-)

Why do you feel like an antique?? It's the model that is technically ignorant in this case. I mean my GF is 22 and she knew what film was when she saw it, she is not a photographer either. All non photographers i talked to about photography know what film is...But even if this wasn't the case, film is not mainstream anymore, it is now a specialist's tool, you cant expect the every day person who only has a cell phone as a camera to know about such a thing...and even when there was no digital cameras..back in '95 say...i personally had no idea what film was either, all i knew is that i had to load it in my 20$ plastic kodak automatic camera...dont ask me what "iso" was either...i always chose 400 because it was higher than 100 and in my mind that was surely better...right? back then, if you showed me a roll of 120 i would not have been sure what it was...i was in my early 20's too so it was not about being too young. So yeah...not antique...just a specialist....

Somehow this reminds me of an epsiode of NCIS, where it was the other way round. (I used to watch this some years ago, that was before I became bored by TV)

[Gibbs hands McGee a digital camera] "Here, McGee, take the, uh, film... dooey-whacker out of there and put it up there on the plasma."

"Well Boss, actually this is a digital camera. They use a memory card now... [off Gibbs's look] I'll put in the dooey-whacker."

Anyone old enough to be modeling should remember using film to take pictures; digital has not been mainstream popular that long yet.

A model in a studio I used to rent once asked me where the dressing room was,"next door and up the stairs" I replied, after about twenty minuets I went to look for her, she had gone outside into the street and climbed a twenty foot ladder that a workman had left leaning against a wall :eek:

I don't entirely agree, first she's 18, and second many NY models are scouted and begin at 15, it's kind of sad...by 22 you're finished as a model (for most).

So being 18, when she was 7 was the last time a pro 35mm film camera came out (Canon 1V in 2001)... 11 years ago, prosumer digitals were heavily bought by 2003 (she would be 9), i had a digital point and shoot that doubled as a webcam by that point, so she really shouldn't have much exposure to film (no pun intended), but it still was kind of a shocker to hear it and a sobering experience. (Correct me if my dates are off)

The one thing that never came to fruition was a hybrid digital+film. I always thought that would be a winner.

So when will digital be unknown? People will mock the DPUG forums

Don't tempt me to a discussion of model intellect, it seems to swing between MIT grad to grade school dropout with no in between, makes you wonder...

My vote's with the dropout, who's smart enough to use her looks while they're worth something in the market. As for college grads? I've known more than a few who weren't smart enough to come in out of the rain. I like both.

True, I don't know a thing about makeup... Or who cheated on who, and who ANY of the American idol / next top model "stars" are.

I'm ignorant too, our perception that this is less important is sadly relative. As much as I'd hate to admit it, to some, that is important stuff and film stuff is irrelevant and stupid..

And mostly, the PhD's tend to be easier to pose for me, but that's because I have a technical mind, not emotional, some models have a hard time understanding direction because I only tell them where to move their arm for example and not "how their arm feels" which is what one model got mad at me shoot, I didn't describe the emotion of the arm so she couldn't understand how to move it.

I'm sure some photogs find it easier to describe emotion and find PhD's to not move gracefully or lack emotion, so again, it's all relative to perspective.
