John is great but he will no longer work on XD or XE bodies, sadly.

Garry's Camera Repair still lists the XD-11 as one they'll work on. I sent them an X-370 with blown capacitors/CLA and they did a fine job. Quite reasonable too.

I don't have good luck with Minolta Maxxum. I have a Maxxum 7 which worked before but then it quit. I tried out the 800si and it worked for a few shots then quit. I have the 9xi also it still work I guess. I also have the 70.
Manual Minolta are good. I had an XK which I sold to Apug member Pentode. It was old but still working well. I have an SRT-101 and an XD-11 which both work well.

I think Canon made one to work in their Canonflex RM2000 reflex in the early 60's. The only other two conventional shutters that reached 1/2000 that I am aware of was the Nikon F2 and the Minolta XM/XK but they had titanium foil shutter curtains. Oh yes how about the Nikon F3 that shutter went from 8secs to 1/2000.

The Olympus OM3 and OM4 both had horizontal travel rubberized cloth curtains capable of 1/2000.

The Canonflex R2000 - no "M", had in fact a horizontal traveling curtain but I can't confirm the material used.

The other horizontal travel - but titanium curtains, capable of 1/2000 shutter speed include the Canon F-1, Canon New F-1, Minolta XK, Nikon F2, Nikon F3 and the Pentax LX.

The material was intended not to get burned when mirror is locked up and lens pointing to the sun. New shutter material - like the Canon EOS 1V, will burn and the manual states a caution not to do this.

It was the RM2000 in UK! I was impressed with the test done on the camera, because the shutter speed accuracy was 98% at the fastest speed. (But there again that was when Canon made all their cameras with metal, not the plasticised effigies which started with the T70 and Eos1.

That is good to know. I'm creating a database of cameras and where they can still be repaired. That may be a useful "sticky" item for Photrio.

I just got an XG-1 that seems to be in very good condition, very clean. It came with a Sigma KII 70-210/4.5 that is clean and fairly smooth as well, but the MD 50/2 must have taken a walk down at the beach......focus is rough and crunchy! Fortunately, replacements aren't too pricey.

I bought an X-700 kit back in the 80s and absolutely loved it, but sold it and got into Contax. Recently I have been having a Minolta Revival and have gotten many Maxxum bodies and lenses. I would like a Maxxum 70. The 7 and 9 are still out of my limited budget. I haven't seen a 9000 in usable condition in a while. It seems that film gear has jumped in price in the past year, Minolta included. I would like another X-700 (or X-570) when possible.

X-570(500) can be had for $50-75 rather easily, although timing is everything. I prefer this over 700 for reasons already explained earlier. Just had it out for a few shots and was like going back to OGD. The X-700 was my first serious body, had it new with 50/1.4 and stupidly I thought I was upgrading by exchanging it for a good used (working fine though) Canon A-1. Nothing wrong with the A-1, except the X700 felt much better from every angle and it took me a few years to actually realize how badly I missed it. Now I have all of MF Minoltas, short of the XK/XM and some variants. My preference is now XE and while XD is nice,I don't subscribe to assessments pushing it much higher in Minolta MF range. In my case it may be related to seeing XE as a major upgrade to SRT (which I also admire) and XD as clearly showing iffy durability by this day and age (just too many offered with some problems, like no other MF Minolta)

I like the Minolta X570. It looks like the X700, lacks the program mode of the X700, but it has a big advantage the X700 lacks -- a fully coupled metered manual mode.

Build quality reminds me of the Fujica ST601, but slightly more robust. Viewfinder is brighter than I expected too.

Minolta is a new brand to me, I've carried out the usual google searches and most problems seem to be capacitor and advance wind lever related.

Any other Minolta fans out there and what bodies should I check out or dismiss.

I regularly shoot Minolta and Pentax film cameras. My Minolta stable contains SRT-201, Hi-Matic 11, X-370, XD-11, Maxuum 7xi, and I just ordered a 9xi. I've no special preference(well, maybe the XD-11 gets used a bit more), and shoot them in rotation. The only one that gave me problems was the X-370(capacitors.....Garry's Camera Repair) I've sufficient MC/MD, AF, XI lenses to suit my needs and they're all a pleasure to use.
