Minolta X-700 Shutter and Stuck Film Advance Lever

I recently purchased a Minolta X-700 through eBay [Serial No. 3160429] and have encountered a bevy of issues after having installed fresh batteries and cleaned the battery contacts.

For one, the shutter curtain is not closed in my camera:

and the mirror is also stuck up. The film advance lever is stuck at the angle shown in this picture:

The camera does turn on, but will only beep and flash with a red light indicating low lighting before I click the shutter and it turns off again. (I can take a video of this if needed).

I am aware that the capacitor is most likely an issue, and I am ready to make the replacement. However, I need to know if the shutter will only work once I replace this capacitor or if that is another mechanical issue that will need to be fixed as well.

If it was listed as a working camera I would contact the seller for a refund.
Otherwise remove the base plate ans see what is out of position using the service manual available at

You could try using a finger nail to help the curtain finish it's travel
which will probably allow the mirror to return. Wouldn't keep it from
happening again when you're at the next wedding/etc/etc

Later model X-700s, such as yours with that serial number of over 3.000.000, will not have a Tantalum capacitator as there were some problems with it getting more expensive in the 90s, so they switched to something cheaper to make the capacitators which made them more prone to failure.

Mine works perfectly despite having been unused for over 2 decades until May of this year, because it's an early 1982-83 model ( Serial No. 1728471 ) and it has a Tantalum capacitator.

If it was advertised as working i would get a refund and return the camera, X-700s are a great camera that can be found for usually under 100$ on Ebay on good working order, and i would recomend that you get an early one with a serial number of under 2.000.000 if possible.

I have sent many Minolta cameras, including several X700s, to John Titterington. He does a great job. When you get the camera back you will be able to use it with confidence.

The x-700 has 2 caps, one at the buttom and the other under the top housing. The only one I ever had looked like new but didn`t work. The cap at the buttom was a tantal, but when I removed the top case I found a cheap electolyte cap. What a BS! And replacing this one is more than a pita. I was so disappointed and angry that I threw the camera away.

X-500 and 300 are so easy to fix that I never wanted another 700.
