Minolta X-700 Lens Stuck in Camera

I got my first film camera, a Minolta X-700 two days ago. I took a few pictures and it was working perfectly until the shutter stopped completely. I read I should remove the lens and put it back on. As I attempted to remove it, the lens only half came out and now it appears to be stuck. The shutter speed dial won't even turn to the right. How can I remove the lens and fix this without hurting my camera?

You should try to get a look at the instruction manual, if you don't already have a copy. Many manuals are available online. Just type in the camera make and model and you should get something. Then you can check proper procedure for lens removal/replacement. Changing batteries may also help. Some cameras lock up when the battery dies. I hope you get it fixed.

This is pretty hard to do, but it happened to me a few years ago. I fiddled with it and got the lens off without destroying it, but can't remember how. Take it to a camera store that does repairs. They'll be able to at least get the lens off for a few dollars. As far as the stuck shutter, it could just need a new battery. On the other hand it could be the classic dead capacitor, a common problem of the X-series - a $7 part that costs $100 to have somebody do the work.

Good luck.

good

You are getting some good advice but I sort of have a question or two. What is a camera store? What is a camera store that does camera repairs? Do they have them in Colorado? They are as rare as Studebaker car dealers in my neck of the woods. There used to be a Studebaker-Packard motor car repair place in El Lay but I have to wonder if it is still in business.

snapguy, I guess you need to get out of California and join all your compatriots here in the mile high state. Yes, we do have camera stores here and most of them do take cameras in for repair.

Oh they have camera stores in California but just not in my desert oasis. But I'd glad they are alive and well in Colorado.
