Minolta HiMatic E Question

Picked up this little camera today at a garage sale, it cleaned up nicely and with some SR44 batteries seems OK. My question is whats the A to E adjustment around the bottom of the lens for? I assume some kind of exposure off-set but the little switch does not make it that easy to use.
