Hi everyone...
I have just acquired a excellent looking Minolta Dynax 5 Slr camera.
When the camera first reached me, it was working all well..and i trial clicked and trial loaded a spare film to check on everything, and it was all fine.
All of sudden, I am experiencing some funny issues with the camera which are as follows,

1. the film will not wind at all.
Even after sticking the leader unto the designated mark and hooking it i the tiny lug on the winder, and closing the back..there is the usual whirring sound and indicator on the LED screen shows that the film has not loaded.
Sure enough, after opening the back, I see that the film leader is as is without winding at all.
I replaced the battery..and tried again...several times over...but nothing works..

2. as soon as I power on the camera...the whirring sound is rather loud and the autofocus does not work.
The Led screens also show both the Autofocus modes and the Manual mode together.
The whirring is repetitive on its own...two to three times...before it falls silent...and when I press the shutter button..it starts again...
I can turn the focusing ring of the lens and get the picture focussed.
Even after pushing down the AF/MF tab on the side, nothing happens, except the loud whirring sound again.
I took out the battery and put in fresh batteries, but nothing has changed.

Sometimes, the Manual focus icon does not show on the LED and the AutoFocus icon shows, but even then, the Autofocus does not work and only by turning the focusing ring, the picture is in focus.
Of course, with the film roll in it, the shutter does not click since the film roll is not loading.
If I take out the film roll, and try clicking the shutter, it clicks sometimes after the loud whirring sound and sometimes clicks cleanly, but without any Autofocus.

My lens is the Minolta D lens, AF, 25-80mm.

I am at my wits end trying to figure this all out...I will be greatly obliged if someone can help..!..

Sounds like there is a broken plastic gear in the film advance mechanism or on the spool maybe. The other issue just sounds messed up beyond worth. I'd return it if possible, then head over to (there was a url link here which no longer exists), and by the same camera (Maxxum 5) with US shipping for $10.00.

Did you check the custom functions chapter on the manual?

What do you mean by "hooking it i the tiny lug on the winder"? There is no "lug on the winder", you just pull the film until the red dot and you close the back. It looks like you tried to load the film the wrong way.

Also, if you turn the lens to focus when it is in AF, you could brake the in-camera lens motor. But you get the whirring sound, that is the camera trying to initialize the lens. To me it sounds like the lens is at fault, not the camera. Unless you broke it....

Edit: and get a better lens, that 28-80/3.5-5.6 (D) is a kitlens and not that good. Get some of those f/3.5-4.5 zoomlenses (24-85/24-105/28-85/28-105/35-105) or, if money is tight, pick up a 35-70/4 - great lens and cheap!

@landzaat ....thanks for the reply...fortunately, I know a bit about loading film into cameras...i have 30 film cameras...so be assured I have not made any "loading" mistake.
Secondly, match the red mark...there is a tiny tiny lug on the winder...if you look closely you will not miss it...the film leader is to be matched with the red spot and that automatically gets this tiny lug into the sprocket..

I also know about the turning the focusing ring in MF and not in AF...so thats not a problem that has happened here.
I repeat that the problem is that the film will just not load and the lens will not autofocus....yes..with the whirring sound.

With many cameras in my collection and using them for several years now, I would like to think that I would know better than to break the camera myself..!!!..
Thanks for the advice on the lens...again, fortunately with my experience, I knew that already.
