Before I put this in the recycle bin I thought maybe someone might think it worthwhile to attempt a fix. The problem I wont try to describe and is of unknown origin. See example attached at 400% crop. This problem was progressive, starting occasionally and now pervasive. At first I thought it was software related and would update Vuescan to latest version and that seemed to work. Now, even when going back to vuescan versions when it was fine doesn't help. Others have sworn that this is fixed with Minolta scanning software, while others say it is a hardware issue and the unit requires all the gear lubricant to be removed and cleaned. I have moved on from all this. $50 + shipping USA. Free if anyone wants to pick up in NYC/Brooklyn.

If nothing else, most likely the film tray is valuable to allow you to purchase and use another unit that doesn't have the tray.

A working 5400 is probably the smoothest way to quality 35mm scans.

I have exactly the same problem with the Minolta 5400 and view scan software.
The Minolta software does not have this problem but that software is really old and not very good.
I've seen similar examples posted but this is the first time I've seen exactly the same issue.
