Hi All,

I have a Minolta Autocord with a metal square hood which is my main carry-around camera for B&W work. However, I've never used filters, and would like to start incorporating them. I've read that Autocords use the same Bay 1 filters as Rollies and Yashicas, and I have a couple of basic new-filter-user questions:

1. On the taking lens, the hood fits around the outside, and it appears that the filter itself simply fits on the inner ring around the lens. Is that correct?

2. How could I use a polarizer in addition to a colored filter plus a hood? Would I need to abandon my current hood and instead get a Bay 1 step-up adapter ring?

Thanks very much for your help!

I wish I had the answers for you but instead have the same questions. I just bought a nice Yashica D and it uses Bay 1 accessories. Anyone??

Minolta's polarizer for the Autocord is an interesting beast that mounts over both lenses (so that you can see the polarization effect through the viewing lens also). I don't think it has any provision for coloured filters to be used simultaneously.

Truthfully I've not used a polarizer with coloured filters. For example, if I want a dark sky, I simply go to an orange or red filter. The darkness of the sky is much more even this way. I can see you might want to use both if you want to manipulate tone and remove reflections simultaneously, but for landscape and scenic photography, you can generally do fine with coloured filters alone.

My coloured filters are little tiny ones (one of the Series filters; I'd have to look) that bayonet into a hood that bayonets onto the taking lens of my Autocord. I could look up the exact specifications, if that's useful. I know that the hood I use is a Kodak hood but it works perfectly with my Autocord (CDS II).

1. Correct. Hood and Bay-1 filter(s) can be used simultaneously.

2. PhotoJim is referring to "Minolta Autopole" which is a rare bird. There is an Bay-1-to-52mm step-up adapter which is cheap and handy if you plan to use a lot of filters.
