Ming Smith

Thanks for this ! Dang, looks like I'll have to plan another trip to NYC...

It's great that they do a feature on her. I have a lot of stuff on the Kamoinge Workshop, but little on her specifically.

Guys. Paywalls exist and are so common. You don't have to announce it every time you run into one and are frustrated. Just work around it if you are interested enough to learn about the work, or, you know, don't.

Better yet, if you hit a paywall and are still curious about the work share whatever you find that is not behind a paywall and add it to the thread.

Also Smith is a badass and definitely worth looking up. The NYT article does justice to her work but there is much more to see.

Indeed ! There is a great Aperture monograph that came out two years ago and that's unfortunately already out of print.

Ming Smith is one of the most original photographer who belonged to the Kamoinge Workshop, but the works of all photographers who were part of itare shamefully too little known, except maybe for that of Anthony Barboza. I sorely regret missing the Kamoinge retrospective at the Whitney in 2020 because of Covid.

@warden, fair enough, but we could also flip it around. If you're enthusiastic about a photographer and would like to share your enthusiasm, why not offer a non-paywalled resource to that anyone can access?

In this case, I did use Google, but can't decide if it's representative for what OP is trying to show/tell us about her work. Not knowing Smith, I practically don't know what I find is even about the right person to begin with.

Wow! Thanks, don't think I have seen her pictures before.
She does beautiful work.
I love it when someone can give you connection to a culture that is foreign to you. Women photographers seem to be so good at that.

He shared what he wanted to share, and that was generous enough. Holland Cotter works for the New York Times and is offering his review of the Ming Smith MoMa show as a NYT Critic’s Pick. Cotter’s article is well written and illustrated, as one would expect from a Pulitzer Prize winning art critic. The article is only available behind a paywall.

The OP has enough information that shows there is a current show at MoMA with a photographer named Ming Smith. Just typing that information in google gets you to images and a video that are not behind a paywall, but do we need Pieter12 to spoon feed that to us?

Here are two links. They’re not Cotter’s review, but they’re something. And the video is worth watching.

It's available from Amazon.

Thanks ! Didn't think of checking.
