More on Flickr Holgaramas, and for sheer inspiration look at the work of ‘Experiments in dreaming’ on Flickr.

I’d like to experiment and I’m wondering on a) choice of equipment and b) how to get fade-off towards the left and right hand side of the frame (please have a look at samples in the link and on Flickr).
I think the choice of equipment is limited, eg Holga, but the fade-off is puzzling to me. I would expect one edge to be more exposed than the other as the film is progressively advanced, ie one disappears out of sight, but the other is in the limelight.

PS I have a sprocket rocket but would need filters to control the light.

I would suspect that the "fade off" is simply a vignetting effect placed on the scanned image in Photoshop or a similar program.

Shooting with the slowest speed film would be a good start, but inexpensive ND filters are available on Evilbay...

Best to resolve to learn the process by burning a few rolls of film; Nothing substitutes for direct experience.

As the author of the article on your link states:

"My best advice is not to get too bogged down in the technique (I can remember stressing about how many degrees to rotate the camera) and just to shoot a test roll - just make a note of how many clicks you wound on on each attempt. It’s all a bit hit-and-miss, but when it works it can produce really interesting results."

Microclicks seems kinda weird to me.....but it's just another technique. The left and right edges get far less exposure than the middle of the frame, thus lower density.

I did some holgaramas 15ish years ago and they turned out pretty good. I wish I had the files handy to post them. Using a 6x6 mask or making the 6x6 mask if you have old holgas like me, set the red window to 16. Overlap frames by about a third. I used three frames. 2 is ok, 4 doesn't align as well as 3 and I couldn't fit them on my scanner. 400 speed film is fine - I used XP2 at the time.
