Does anyone know the differences between the 45CT and 45CL Metz flashes. I know the 4 series denotes battery packs and I think an additional auto step. I need a handle mount flash for my 501cm, no pro work, and am wondering if any price differences would justify going with the older model.

I've got a CT-3 and a CL-3. The Ct has more F/stops if you're in auto mode. The CL has a different ready light. Other then that the CLs will always be newer. The CT-5 uses the no longer sold type of module [500 type?] The older CT-1s are high voltage and may damage electronic cameras. If you go to the Metz website they have the serial number when the CT-1s became safe. The CT-4/CL-4 have a second fill light on the flash.

If it was me I'd buy the cheaper one. You don't really gain anything with the CL over the CT. My CL-3 is actually in worse shape then the older CT-3 which just goes to show age isn't the biggest issue. You might want to stick to the models that take the SCA 300/3000 modules [-3 and -4] so you can use the same flash on other cameras to.

The 45 is the guide number. They're all hamerhead, and basically the same size and shape. They all use the same battery packs which slot into the base of the handle - we've got a new 45CL4 and then picked up an old 45CT1 with loads of packs, and a charger. There are ni-cad packs or there are packs which take regular batteries - watch out for older ni-cad packs which die, and need to be re-celled.

The CL vs the CT model also affects (apart from being newer) the ability to work with the various 300 and 3000 series camera adapters, so they can act as dedicated flashes [it's pretty complex, so I'm not sure of allt he details]. If you're happy setting the aperture manually then all will be fine with either. However watch out for very old CT's they have high voltage sync which is not good for your camera (check Metz website for serial numbers). However my CT puts about about 15V and is fine.

The head can swivel on all models (I think), the 45CL/T4 have a secondary flash so when you point the main flash at the ceiling, there's a small fill in flash still pointing directly at them.

There are other more minor differences in exactly what setting you get - the 45CL4 has a low power "Winder" mode for use with motor-drives, and uses an led rather than neon power indicator.

Provided if you don't need the automation, and you check for safe-syncing then the older ones basically do the same thing. However the batteries and capacitors can die, so check that its all working properly before parting with cash.

Any links?

I couldn't find anything thru the Metz site on CT serial numbers. In fact the site is kind of sucky and doesn't even seem to mention any of the 45 series at all. Does anyone have a link and suggestion.

I just dug out my 45CT1 manual: "Low voltage thyristor triggering circuit for units from serial no 534000 onwards".
