I have this flash that came with a Hasselblad I bought but the rechargeables are dead. I put in enerloops in the regular battery holder but I read in a few places this is not a good idea since the enerloop and others have a higher voltage than the alkaline batteries. Is this only a problem when using the flash with a digital camera or is it a bad idea even with film?
Any thoughts or alternatives?

I always use eneloop compatible batteries with my Metz 45CT1 in the regular battery basket and never have experienced any problems. When empty, I charge them outside the flash unit with a separate battery charger and then put them back in the basket when full. Works like a charm for me.

Eneloops have a charge voltage of 1.45V specified, which is a little lower than the 1.50V for Alkalines. However, Eneloops (or any NiMh battery for that matter) can usually deliver more current per second than Alkalines.
In practice this results in faster cycle times, and this is where you might want to be a bit careful by not repetitively firing the flash too quickly after the previous flash, as this might heat up the internals of the flash too much.

Rechargeable AA batteries are NOT higher voltage than alkaline AA. Fully charged NiMH, about 1.35V vs. 1.50V alkaline

When compared to alkaline, rechargeable AA batteries do have different internal resistance and discharge characteristics. This can result in the supply of more current.
The lower voltage and higher current combination can cause problems with some mechanisms.

Since back in the 1990s I use Quantum battery packs with my 45CT3 anc 45CT4 during wedding coverage, and have put rechargeable AA in the standard battery holder merely to power the LCD status display. In fact, I can put in a 'dummy' unit (I froget where I bought it) in place of a AA rechargeable so that there are only four rechargeable batteries installed to power the LCD, while the Quantum supplies the recharging of the power capacitor for the flash.
