Metabisulfite in classic Rodinal

Why the classic Rodinal recipe (that one with 100 g/L p-AP HCL) asks for metabisulfite which is getting neutralised later instead of a plain sulfite? Has it something to do with solubility?

Appears that originally bisulfite solution was used because it was cheaper.
