Hi folks, happy festive season to all and sundry and my best wishes for a super creative year ahead.

Yesterday I assembled a "new" Meopta Opemus 6a enlarger and am all set to start printing. I have a doubt about the filter tray which is only refered to in the deeply meaningful instructions in regards to colour, and even so, not particularly clearly. As I am doing only B&W and the enlarger head is "a" for B&W, I am using Ilford's filter set which I have used before, but in the tray there is a ground-glass fitted insert which I haven't come across before in B&W filter trays. It's removable but before I try it out I was wondering if anyone can advise me as to the necessity or not of the glass when I filter. There seems to be a huge amount of glass in the Meopta before light actually hits the paper which is why I am doubting whether the glass is only necessary for colour printing.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Joe

I have the same enlarger, I don't use the glass insert unless I am printing with a 150W blub for some of dense negatives from the 60s and early 70s.

Thanks Paul, that's great. It confirms that my doubts were warranted which is a good sign that I am learning things. I have a 75w bulb and I am printing 6x6 with an 80mm lens
