Meopta Opemus 6 query

Good afternoon to one and all. I am currently investigating methods of enlarging; taking a 5x7 to an 8x10 and then, hopefully larger. I have found a few methods which I tried over the weekend on two prints that got close, but not what I had expected. So far.

I will continue my research, although if anyone has a magic wand... don't hesitate to flash it in my direction.

One thing on the Meopta Opemus 6 that I haven't fathomed yet is the graduated numerical table on the block of the elevation mechanism on the enlarger itself. I have no idea what it is.

Any help on this would be most welcome. In fact any help at all would be most welcome.

I am already printing with the enlarger but I would like to know just what the table refers to and how I can use it to assist my printing. I don't know if it has anything to do with making adjustments for enlarging my photos or is simply a guide.

Thanks a lot Paul. That is for an older version. I have the same for the model I have but there is no reference to the table (above) on the block

I think it tells you the required height for a given focal length and desired enlargement factor.

Yep that what it is, I have one on by my Opemus and LP 7500. I never use it, never found a need.

First column is magnification (X), then lens you are using 80mm, 50mm and 30mm lens, numbers bellow (on black background) are required hight of enlarger head that corresponds with numbers engraved on enlarger column.
So, you are using 35mm negative (24x36mm) with 50mm lens and want to enlarge it to 24cm, that is 6.666X enlargement and you need to raise enlarger head between 16-21.
It also tells you that with 6x6 and 80mm lens you can have max enlargement of 7.6x, or 42.5cm at 53 height and with 35 mm film, 50mm lens, 13x or 46.8cm at 52

We have a saying in Catalonia: never go to bed without learning something new. This time it was reversed... I woke up this morning and learned something new as soon as I did

Thanks so much for the detailed explanation... something new to get my head around. Probably useful initially to get me to the height and from there I and do that may ratios and adjustment factor for the time will be more accurate. Much appreciated my friend.

You are very welcome Hoganlia! Unfortunately, markings on the column are very crude with out finer scales. On Durst enlargers they used cm and mm scales, so it can be very precise and I'm using it all the time. Meopta made very good enlargers and lenses, so enjoy your time in darkroom.

Life in the darkroom is challenging and frustrating at times, but I am loving it. (And slowly, slowly getting there)
