For anyone in Melbourne or central Victoria (Australia) I highly recommend seeing the exhibition detailed below at the Bendigo Art Gallery. It's even free.

It's a collection of some of the finest black and white prints you are ever likely to see, mostly vintage or printed during the life time of the respective photographers. If you love the work of the likes of C.S Bull, George Hurrell or similar Hollywood greats then you have to be nuts to miss this.

The exhibition is on 'till 12th Feb. I'm probably going to go again while I have the chance.

The book is worth every cent, $49 IIRC. Interestingly the prints in the book are 'better' in many respects than the actual images on display. The images in the book are some times larger, sharper and certainly 'brighter' (as the illumination in the Gallery leaves some thing to be desired) but the real images can't have their glow/brilliance reproduced.

Marc, is it a paperback or a hard cover book?

I'm getting conflicting information, dependent upon whom I'm considering purchasing this book from.

Landed in Australia from the UK, it's $28.09 today.

Marc, thanks for that, purchasing it from The Book Depository will save me at least $10.00 which will go to the cost of diesel, allowing me to see the exhibition and have the book, for approximately the cost of the book alone in this country.

We are going up tomorrow, camping in the sticks overnight, then home late Sunday

Very good exhibition, although I could have used a torch to light up a couple of prints. The lighting on some prints wasn't dim, it was abysmal.

The highlight for me was a 1948 colour print of a sixteen year old Elizabeth Taylor, stunning in the colour balance and density. It is a dye transfer colour print, probably about the most perfect colour printing possible.

I saw the book displayed, yep it is on special, reduced to $44.95. Interesting sized publication, I'll have my copy in a week or two from Scotland.

I was quite amazed at how young many actors and actresses were when they died, obviously a profession whereby your life expectancy is on the low side.
