Melbourne and Her People

Yesterday I visited the Melbourne Camera Club to look at their latest exhibition, called "Melbourne and Her People".

All of the pictures presented, belong to the Melbourne Camera Club and span the entire life of the camera club as well as a few years prior to the club forming.

I thought it was an excellent exhibition and viewing prints that are over 100 years old makes for interesting comparisons to present day materials and quality of product.

For those living outside Melbourne, especially those from overseas. There is one picture of the Exhibition Building which still stands today and is still used for exactly what it was built for; exhibitions. This picture is dated 1880, the building facade and interior are essentially the same today, which in this country, is very rare.

Interested to note Bruce Postle was apparently a member? I picked up 3 of the books in his recent series from the discount table last January - Australia, Sport and Entertainers.

Yes I thought the same thing. I do remember visiting the Melbourne Camera Club many moons ago to hear Bruce expound on things photographic more than a few times, so it is possible he may have been a member.

I am not a member, although, as they are effectively the only club in Melbourne with an active darkroom users group, or maybe it is called an analogue users group; which I found out on Saturday has about 40 members specifically doing this aspect of photography, I wonder...

I've also just found out, that if you hit the + sign on the link that opens up to the catalogue, one can see quite large sized pictures of the show pieces.

The Melbourne Camera Clubs archive of historically important images is very impressive. It needs to show them way more often than it does but this is easier said than done. As a past member, and having been involved in the group which looked after these resources, i highly recommend joining if you have the time and inclination. There's a huge amount of knowledge , talent and experience there.

Some great pictures on the link. Always good to see Australian content, has much more relevance than seeing over seas pictures of times and places Im not familiar with.
