medium format or 35mm (for me)?

hi fontmoss i'm from barcelona, so if you need any guide with spanish burocracy i can give you some help.
also if i would have read your post before i could have send you a 35mm nikon body to try, btw if you still want it i can send it to you.

You will realize how expensive can film be here in spain, all i can say is that i'm buyin film abroad. And if you are planning to develop and print by yourself, at least here in barcelona we have "centros sociales", there is usually one in every neighberhood, and at least in barcelona quite a few have darkroom that you can rent for hours, good news are that they are dirty cheap but also quite basic, if you tell me in wich area are you i can have a look on the net or ask to fellows photographers from madrid.

I'd suggest that you decide what size prints you intend to make first. You can get very good 8x10 prints from a 35mm neg. But you will see better tonality, even at 8x10, with larger negs. Low light? Choose 35 mm because you can shoot at wider apertures and still get decent DOF.

I quoted this only because it is completely spot-on. I do get very nice darkroom prints up to 8x10 from 35mm. But it's still more work than with MF (dust). But sometimes (like with low light) you need the 35mm camera.

Oh, and if you are working digitally in post (like I do for color), wait till you scan a MF negative. A mere 600dpi scan yields a 20mp image! Scanning at 1200dpi like I do 35mm for the web, yields an 80mp image that crashes my computer (ask how I know).

I would go with 35mm since there are so many film choices available such as Kodachrome.

You posted this in the MF section, so it must come as no surprise that someone (happens to be me this time) tells you that even Kodachrome can not put 35 mm on the same level with MF.

im in barcelona in a couple of weeks (Visca barca! lo siento esto eso todo que lo se en catalan) to see my gf's family for a few days but poss not long enough to say hello.

digi will still be my low light workhorse but the MF offers me a totally dif way of working and hopefully some great results

i know that gf's family travels, mine is from sweden
you will love mf, and dont forget a polaroid back! it's a must and you and your models will recieve instant feedback, better than those crappy digi lcds!
