Medium format only magazines?

Hey guys, I'm looking to subscribe to some sort of film-based magazine, but would be really interested if there were any medium format based magazines. I'm open to all suggestions!

This might be a long shot, but I thought I'd ask. Any suggestions for magazines that encompasses all aspects of analog photography would be great too.

Beats me, there used to be a magazine for medium format exclusively. I can't think of the name. Mamiya had something they sent out but it was not the bookstore kind.

There is Victor published by Hasselblad, even more exclusive than just medium format...

closest might be 'photo techniques'

note really meduim format, but a magazine, like the title suggests, that is about the technique. It has a foot still in analog, nad does not push that it is in every way inferior to digital, which it also covers.

Look at a meduim format camera as a tool to give the look to photos that you want. A photo on its own cannot be viewed to say 'that was taken on a 'blad500cm etc'. It can say 'oh, nice limited depth of focus' which meduim format may allow you to achieve easier than with 35mm, and still do so while handholding for the shot. ( I am not trying to offend any speed graphic users who could also hand hold for the same shot look.)

The market for MF is not summed up neatly - you wont likely find a review of all products side by side. Not in a way that you might for current offering dslr from all the ajor vendors in some annula photo magazine atricle.

If you don't yet have experience working in MF, then spring for $50, for a Yashica C etc TLR, and the same amount for 10 or so rolls of film, and see what it does for you. Drog your 35mm etc along to use for its light meter, and for when shots pop up that meduim format does not handle as well, like quick action situations. Live with it a while, and then see how you wnat to move further. You might not move at all for a little while. Don't go gear gaga. The gear is a tool to get the photos. The most important part of the chain lies between your own ears.

Well, our good friends from MAGNAchrome are into MF, LF, and everything colour (with the occasional foray into B&W). Just google them up, or wait for their active representative to manifest himself on this thread.

Hey Mike, thanks for sharing our thoughts. I agree that the best way to learn is hands on. As for the magazine, I just wanted something to read to pass the time on the john or while eating lunch (not at the same time of course!). I wasn't looking for gear reviews or techniques only, but even more about different photographers and essays written by them.

I'm open to any analog based magazine, but was wondering if there was a MF specific magazine.

I guess it will be difficult finding a MF magazine that's being printed. I will have to hop over to the Magazine forum and search for analog based magazines!

Jason I read Black & White Photography and View Camera, the latter almost exclusively for LF interests. You might also look at Arizona Highways. Doesn't matter if these things are mostly geared to LF, you will still learn a lot about the many possibilities in analogue photography (and that other kind as well). You might also check out Rangefinder magazine, which has broad appeal.

Less active these days promoting and more active producing the magazine. Still fun though. The goal is to eventually offer MAGNAchrom in print (so I too can sit in the bathroom reading it). In the meantime, it is a downloadable-only mag, which some have even gone out of their way to print on their inkjets. Not sure sitting on the can with a laptop reading any mag is my idea of fun.

In the meantime, we are about 50/50% medium to large format (as is our audience). I'd like to think we have a good mix of reviews, interviews, and portfolios. We also try to keep the mix of analog to digital in proper proportion.

Anyway, if there is something we can do to make it more appealing for you, please feel free to pmail me anytime.

I just registered, too, and downloaded latest issue. Wow! It looks good so far and I will try to print since this is definitely premo sitting-reading. J Michael,
It would be great if you could make your pdf for MAGNAchrom in 8.5 x 11 so I don't have to use a magnifying glass to read it when I print it. Otherwise great job, I love it.
