About a month ago I was walking around in Santa Fe NM with my family, we were out shooting photos. I call it Family Photo Safari. Anyway. I was approuched by a young guy and his girlfriend from Colorado that was admiring my camera and asked if he could snap a pic. Of course with a Nikon D700. Anyway I thought I would share. Maybe some of you could share a pic of you and your gear when you go out.

For some reason, whenever I hear Rollei, I always think of the 35, and not the TLRs.

"So we saw this dude in Santa Fe with this totally random old camera -- it was really cool! I took a picture -- do you know anything about these? I guess they take some weird film?"

Someone called my camera 'like, totally steampunk' the other day. It was a Graflex. I guess if it had a voice, it would sound like a wheezing, grinding, spluttering Tom Waits.

I was out for a walk and two younger women asked if I would take their picture with their camera. I took the camera and held it up to my eye and was momentarily confused as to why I couldn't see through it. Ugh! I felt old...

I've been walking around and shooting in San Francisco with my Rolleiflexes for the last 15+ years now. It's gone from barely being noticed, to a number of people starting about 5 years ago commenting how cool it is, to now often the 20-something hipsters are pointing me out to their friends but rarely initiating any contact or conversation, unless I say hello, then its "That camera is awesome!"

Adding me and my beloved Tele-rolleiflex:

I often shoot with this pistol grip and pan as if its a movie camera, and shoot as I slowly pan. Interestingly, people are much more casual and seemingly nonchalant about being in your home movie than they are if they think you are shooting them with a still camera and making a photo.

I was setting up my Speed Graphic here, on the side of a dirt road near Noxon, MT when two young guys in a pickup dressed entirely in camo drove up and stopped by me. They didn't say anything, just gave me a kinda cold look. I didn't know what to say, so I simply said,"Old school." The response was great: "Hell, ya!" and smiles all around. They drove off laughing and I got my shot once the dust cleared.
