People keep asking me whether I do Pt/Pd workshops and I’m unable to resist anymore. I’m therefore holding a one day master class in London on the 31st May. To maximise the amount of quality time, numbers are limited to no more than two learners.

My aim, to borrow a phrase from Michael A Smith, is for this to be the last Pt/Pd workshop you ever need to attend. It will be a no holds barred deep dive into Pt/Pd printing for people who understand the basics and want to go further (or first timers who are happy to jump in at the deep end).

We’ll start the day with a demonstration of how I print, and then concentrate on your negatives for the rest of the day. I will work with you to help you create the best prints you can in the time available. We’ll work with Potassium Oxalate and use Potassium Dichromate for contrast control. There won’t be a formal curriculum, but we can look at different papers, different Pt/Pd mixes, contrast control, humidity, and anything else that seems worthwhile to try. If useful we can also look at step wedges and densitometer readings. The emphasis would be very much on exploration, trial and error, and building an understanding of what’s really going on rather than theory.

Have you noticed that it’s after a workshop when we try to put things into practice that we think of all the important questions? Well I’m also offering an optional 2-3 hour follow up diagnostic/Q&A session to participants, scheduled perhaps a month or so after the workshop. This would be an opportunity to ask all those questions and resolve some of your real world printing problems.

Negatives: you will need to bring your own negatives with you. While it’s possible to contact print medium format negatives I recommend that you use 5x4 or larger negatives developed specifically for Pt/Pd printing (I will advise you on this before the workshop). You can also use digital negatives but I’m unable to help you prepare these.

Safety: Potassium Oxalate and Potassium Dichromate are poisonous. If you are not happy to handle these chemicals then this workshop is not for you. I can supply you with the relevant data sheets but you are responsible for your safety...

If you’re interested then please contact me for further information, costs, etcetera.
