Google Form for those interested:

Apologies for all the words, all of it is relevant and should be read.

This might look familiar, and it should, this is the second thread I’ve made on a similar subject.

However, although the previous thread did mention Aviphot as an option for the purchase, most folks were more interested in Aerocolor IV, which unfortunately, had a higher minimum order than I was lead to believe by the person who gave me the idea (who was looking at older documentation).

With that out of the way, Aviphot 200 is definitely something I can make into sheet film and medium format films, as it can easily be found on eBay for a good price, in smaller quantities. Aviphot is an amazing film, which has unique qualities not seen in many other films. Some unique qualities of Aviphot 200:
  • Best exposed at 100 ISO, however 200 ISO is possible with half a stop pushed in dev, and 400 with a 2 stop push.
  • Coated on an exceptionally clear PET base, and makes great black and white slides.
  • Sensitive to near IR light, 700-775nm. With a filter that excludes light below 700nm, such as the Hoys R72, it can make excellent IR images, with glowing foliage and dark skies.

I will be making sheet film from 5 inch (126mm) stock, expired 10/2014, cold stored since new. The 120 and 220 film will be made from 70mm stock, expired 12/2012. Both from a seller I have used before, and whose product has worked out phenomenally.

How to let me know you are interested:

You can fill out the poll attached to this thread, however, this is only for a quick gauge of interest, and doesn’t have all the details I would need to figure out viability. If you are interested in being a part of this project, fill out the google form at the top of the post to let me know what formats you are interested in, as well as how much film you are interested in.

Formats:

I can make films in these sizes relatively easily:
  • 5x7
  • 4x5
  • 220
  • 120
Other formats may be possible, although the cost to make may be slightly higher. You can ask on the google form linked above.

Minimum orders:

I need to reach a minimum amount of film purchased to make this a viable project, however, it is not a super large amount.

Do note: those minimums are the cumulative orders I receive, and you as an individual do not need to meet these minimums.

From 5 inch stock:
  • 5x7: 6 boxes
  • 4x5: 10 boxes
  • or, a combination of the above equivalent in value to $300 or more
From 70mm stock:
  • 220: 12 rolls
  • 120: 20 rolls
  • or, a combination of the above equivalent in value to $140 or more
Pricing
  • 5x7, 25 sheet pack: $55
  • 4x5, 25 sheet pack: $30
  • 220, 1 roll: $12
  • 120, 1 roll: $7
Shipping:
  • Shipping to US is $10, and will be sent via Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box.
  • international buyers shipping will be dependent on your country, and will be sent via Priority Mail International Small Flat Rate Box. International buyers are responsible for any additional costs, including import fees and taxes. For exact shipping prices, see these links:
Payment (Important! Please read!):

I will be accepting PayPal only, and due to PayPal requiring a 21 day hold before allowing access to any payments over $200 in a month via goods and services, I cannot accept goods and services payments for this order. You must use Friends and Family for payment. This is equivalent to cash up front, and I understand if you are not comfortable with this arrangement, and you aren’t comfortable with participating. Unfortunately, as I cannot provide shipping details immediately after payment (as the film has not been purchased or cut down yet), there isn’t much I can do. If you are an international buyer, make sure the friends and family option is available to you.

What about 70mm bulk rolls?
Do you mean for 616/116 film? I can cut the film to that length, however I don’t have any backing paper, so you would either need to send me some, or I would send you just the film. If you want longer lengths of film, such as for 70mm cassettes, you may want to look into getting the film from the eBay seller I use directly. I can send you a link to some 70mm film that will work well in those if you are interested. Do let me know your thoughts.

Added a date to the thread in case someone finds it years from now.

Good luck with this project, I hope it succeeds!
thank you!

By the way, I had bought two 90mts unperforated 70mm rolls so far and had great results with it. Tested at 25, 40, 50, 80 and 100 ISO and liked 100 ISO the best.

I've used F76+ and POTA developer. Used POTA when I wanted more moderated contrast and F76+ when I want a more dramatic look (although the contrast is still pleasant). For development I use gentle agitation each minute to control .

Tried to use it at 200 ISO but so far haven't liked the results so sticking to 100 ISO.

If I remember correctly it was PhotoImpex in Germany that I bought several 30Meter rolls of Rollei 400s 70mm Perforated. I inquired and they had about 400 cans in stock at that time, all long gone but shows up here and there. That is exactly the same as Aviphot 200, no question about it. And I also bought some Aviphot 200 from a Guy in Russia that was cutting from big roll, I bought 100 sheets of 9x12cm. I've been using Rollei Supergrain Developer from Freestyle, which was recommended on the bottle to use with Rollei 400s. It's contrasty and I bought the chems to make MeCd4, that is suppost to flatten the slope/curve of this film as it is kind of weird. POTA sounds interesting, I have a friend that uses Diafine and it has a compensating effect that might be a good answer. Diafine can be used until it dries up LOL. I bought a gallon of Diafine from B&H biut have yet to try it.

Yes very interested. This film KINKS really easily, which creates crescent moons on the latent image. So it is a PITA to handle carefully, but pretty easy to do. I'd be interested in getting some 220 rolls, are they ready to use or do I have to roll it up in the dark? I'm cutting my 9.5" roll, it makes perfect 18x24cm, with only one cut. And the 18x24cm makes a beautiful contact print (nice black border) on 8x10 silver paper.

So this is a cool timely thread

This is definitely good information. 200 ISO in HC-110 A for 10 minutes works well for me, though 100 ISO in HC-110 A for 8 minutes also works, with slightly less grain. Each to their own taste, though.

Yep, it’s on the thinner side, but thankfully it’s not tissue paper thin. Just gotta be a bit carful.

120/220 rolls are ready to load in the camera and shoot. They also have stickies on both ends, so no need to fiddle with rubber bands or anything (although it may be a good idea to bring some anyway, never a bad idea to be prepared just in case).

I used Aviphot 40 on a thinner base and I did had the kink issue often. I had better luck with Aviphot 200 (probably is due to the thicker base?) but still have it now and again, so only solution is being careful when rolling and when loading into your tank.

Thanks for the HC-110 info. Will get some and give it a shoot. Would really like to use it as 200 ISO film.

Definitely get some HC-110 now, the Kodak stuff is about to become unobtanium. Though I’ve heard substitutes like FPP110 and LC-110 work just as well, thankfully.

Yeah heard that too, just not the same longevity, although I don't think that is much of an issue, more interested on the results I get from it.

Wow, lots of folks interested in 220! Glad to see it! Looks like most of the folks that have taken the poll haven’t filled out the google form. If you could do that, I would really appreciate it, makes things a ton easier.

Well I guess there is plenty of cameras that use 220 (Mamiya C330 and 6x7), Kiev 6, Yashica 124g, Bronica ETRS, etc. So getting a cheap 220 roll make shooting sessions a lot easier.

@Nokton48 this is a kind reminder that this thread is about organizing a group buy, not an exploration of the pictorial characteristics of the product. Large images hinder navigation of the thread. Thank you for your consideration.

Edit: thank you, much appreciated.

(I enjoy your images in e.g. your darkroom renovation thread!)

Yes, thank you for your advice.

I would like to have those links, my A70 backs, ache for new film.

Cheers and Godspeed,
Eli

And do no forget the very many Hasselblad A24 backs, reduced to only 12 frames of their glory!

Sorry for the delay, I have been dealing with life and all the fun stuff that that entails.

Just did a tally of the current form submissions, and I’m happy to say that 220/120 will absolutely be getting made.

Sheet film has a bit less interest, however. It is not quite at the minimum. Pretty close though.

I’ll be sending out messages to those who did the form, so look out for those.

I just created a user on here after a long while of lurking just to fill out the form - I'm very interested in some 220 rolls for my beloved Rolleiflex SL66

Too bad it's not aviphot pan 80. The 200 doesn't interest me so much and the 80 has so much better grain and sharpness.

Yeah, Aviphot 200 is the only stuff available on secondary sadly, otherwise you gotta go through Agfa and deal with their MOQ. Which unless it’s 9.5 inch film, is an entire master roll. Definitely not something I can manage myself.

Planning on closing the order window on May 31st, so if you’re interested, definitely let me know. So far, we have way more than the minimum for MF film, but sheet film we are a bit shy.

I may extend the order window for just sheets, or maybe ask about sheet film letter on, after the medium format order. We’ll see what happens.
