Mating Shutters with Lenses

I am seeing a lot of lenses with threaded mounts but no shutters. I understand that there is no "universal" way to match up any random shutter a lens. But I'm wondering if there is some rule of thumb.

For example, I'm looking at a Wollensak 65mm f/6.3 which would seem to be a good wide angle candidate for a miniature Graphic. What are the chances of that mounting thread fitting into a Compur or similar shutter? Obviously the shutter would be behind the lens rather than between the elements, but that shouldn't be an issue.

Tim, I've paid skgrimes for quite a few adapters to let me hang lenses in front of shutters. Short answer, with the exception of some Fujinar lenses made to screw into the fronts of Shanel #5A (or is it B? Can't remember which) shutters and Tominon macro lenses for the Polaroid MP-4 system that screw into the front of Copal #1s and one Rodenstock macro lens for the MP-3 there are no (someone please find that I'm badly mistaken) barrel lenses that screw right into shutters.

There are some lenses sold in barrel whose cells are direct fits in standard shutters. Many Schneider lenses, a few Rodenstocks. A few Kodak lenses were sold in Compur standard shutters, are very rare in barrel and there's no guarantee that the barrels are to the Compur standard. Nothing at all from Wollensak.

About y'r 65/6.3 Wolly. If it really is f/6.3 it is most likely a triplet or a tessar type. If so it won't cover 2x3. If it is a 65/6.8, well then it is a wide angle lens that just covers 2x3. The 65/6.8 Raptar/Optar was an original issue w/a lens for 2x3 Graphics. Good luck finding a Wolly shutter that will accept the cells.

MostRodenstock camera taking lens cells are a direct fit to modern 0, 1 and 3 shutters. The exception were the Apo Geronar and Apo Rodagon process lenses.

I’m not familiar with a Wollensak 65mm f/6.3, but if your lens is the 6.8 wide angle, then the catalog page below indicates that it was available in barrel, Alphax, and Rapax.

Measure your lens cell threads and see if they are consistent with the Alphax #1 or Rapax #1 shutter mount dimensions available here: https://alphaxbetax.com/resources/

Thanks for the info. Guess I'll stick to mounted lens/shutters until I decide to build that guillotine shutter.
