Does anyone know a master printer in London? I'm looking to train and I need to find a printer to teach me fine art printmaking. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you

You can try Les McLean. He's up in Northern England on the Scottish boarder but frequents London often. He is open to opportunities to teach and you may be able to work something out. A finer printer will be hard to find.

Why not get in touch with Jerry Lebens? He's based in Brighton and has (or had) access to a darkroom for hire. Brighton is only 45 minutes by train from London and Jerry is an excellent teacher, printer, all round good egg and Ilford Master to boot.

His website is:

Alternatively, Yoko Matze is in London and may be able to help you:

Hope these help.

You might try asking Mike Crawford, who's a member here and a printer in London and an Ilford Master printer, also Silverprint have a darkroom side as well.

Ilford also make Inkjet papers once under the Ilford brand, Jerry Lebens is on that side although whether for Ilford now I'm not sure.

Les McLean also gives Master Classes in these too, not sure who for these days but he did work for Permajet as well.

Hi Guys,

Actually I'm a traditional printer with over 30 years darkroom experience and, like Les and Mike, I represent Ilford as a Master Printer giving courses in photographic/darkroom skills - not digital. The last course I ran for Ilford was to some twenty photography teachers and lecturers in SW England.
Other Ilford Masters include Andrew Sanderson, Dave Butcher, Branca Jukic, Steve MacLeod and Stuart Keegan (sorry if I've left anyone out!) - all excellent traditional printers.

No reason for surprise Ralph. No, I don't run my own darkroom. I live in Brighton where there's an excellent facility run by Odyssey (the people who make DeVere enlargers) which is far better equipped than anything I could ever hope to provide. Better still, I don't have to pay the rent, do the maintenance, wipe the floor, empty the bin...

Regards
Jerry

Thanks for the explanation. A rented or shared darkroom just would not work for me. I need my own space. A darkroom is a very individual thing to me. For teaching purposes, OK, but for my own printing, I don't think so.

Apologies for saying you are on the other side, but you do write about that side in B&W Magazine :D So it's not clear which way you bat, so to speak

I use printing as a key aesthetic in my own work. I'm looking to work in an apprentice type role with a master fine art printer to learn and further develop techniques, to work with clients to discuss and fulfill their brief. I am particularly interested in solarisation, lith printing, alternative and historical processes, framing and mounting.

So you want to print other photographer's work? I think I can understand your question more now.
