I just went to Digitaltruths.com Massive Development Chart to check time for Ilford Delta 100 in my homemade FX37 developer and now I'm puzzled.

Massive Dev Chart Search Results

Delta 100 Pro FX-37 1+3 100 8.25 8.25 8.25 68F [notes]
Delta 100 Pro FX-37 1+3 160 7.5 7.5 7.5 68F
Delta 100 Pro FX-37 1+5 200 7.5 7.5 7.5 68F

I don't understand how you can rate the film at EI/ISO 160 and develop in a dilution of 1+3 for 7.5 minutes then rate the same film at EI/ISO 200 and develop it at a higher dilution of 1+5 for the same amount of time 7.5 minutes. I'd say this must be some kind of misprint since the 1+5 dilution should surely take a longer time to develop fully. John W

1: rare that people even know how to test for iso
2: anyone can post data

I am lucky enough to have enough film around to run my own tests. If I go there, it's for a ballpark start time. If I am going to start using a new film, I will buy at least 3 rolls to burn.

I found another questionable time using Delta 100 as well:

The Massive Dev Chart

Same dilution but a small difference in agitation. Only use the 16 minute and comes out well. Never was brave/foolish enough to do the 45 minute one.

The Massive Development Chart is a collection of results from a number of unidentified, different people. In some ways, it is a lot like Wikipedia. I have never seen anything that indicates that any of the data has ever been verified by anyone.

Some of it probably has been checked. But how can you tell which?

It is handy for weird stuff - where you might never expect to see manufacturer's times. But other than that, I wouldn't rely upon it.

By the way, the link in the first post is wrong (there is an extra "s"). It should be: http://www.digitaltruth.com/devchart.php

If you use an exotic developer you need to do your own tests...

If you are starting with Delta 100 and ID11 you need to use a kitchen timer for the Ilford time and a sweep second for once a minute inversion.

If it is a new cam or exp meter same.

Then you print the neg on grade 2, if it doesn't sparkle you got the wrong time...

With 35mm you only need a few frames on each soup test, film extractor, etc. Exaktas even had a knife and two cassette option useful if you don't bulk load.

I assume this is what is meant by 'dialing in'.

I actually do a density test on a grey card. The final judgement.

Yes, I would do my own testing if this were a film I was going to use as an everyday type film, but this was just the remainder of a bulk roll I had. I don't plan on using Delta 100 after this and only wanted a starting time for a practice roll. It's not a big deal, but thought it rather strange to see those developing times the same at 7.5 minutes. John W

Whoops! I really wasn't setting up a link, but was just stating where I got the info. Still, I should have checked the spelling. John W

Determination of ISO is made by the manufacturer according to some very strict standards. The ISO can not be changed by others. What the individual worker does is determine an effective "Exposure Index" or EI based on their methods, materials and equipment.

I guess it's time to make my own app, with data from my own notes. I guess I could still pull comunity data, just let my own override.

All of my times are a bit whacked so I'd never post them to the Massive Development chart. I target grade 3 instead of grade 2 and my thermometer is about 4 degrees off. I wouldn't trust anything on there that isn't a commercial developer with a widely available film. You are trusting someone else's testing (or guess) and they may have a thermometer like mine!
