Marilyn Stafford

Marilyn Stafford passed away at age 97. One of her first published photographs was of Albert Einstein slumped in a chair at his Princeton, New Jersey home. She was a contemporary of all the twentieth century great photographers and was encouraged by Robert Capa to persue a career in photography. The New York Times has her obituary but the best line was at the end when she mentioned a quote from a photographer she had met yers before, “Photographers don’t grow old, they just grow out of focus.”

I didn't know her work until now. I find her documentary photography very touching, especially the Algerian refugees series.
Love that phrase too.

I was given a coffee mug with that (uncredited) quote about four decades ago.

I can still read it, so I hope that means I have not (yet) grown old!
