On the film backs for the RB Pro SD.....6x7...can they be used for both 120 and 220.?

The backs are in two parts. An outer cassette and an insert. The insert contains almost all the working bits. You can use any SD shell with any insert (6x4.5 120, 6x7 120, 6x7 220, ???).

It is quite rare to find the shells and inserts separately.

You may be right, I don't have hardware here to verify, however the documentation, copied below, shows different part numbers for 120 and 220 film holders.

I am communicating with somebody in another state. She does not know if it is 120 or 220, and i am not sure how to tell her to check.
The back i have says 120 on the top. Hers either does not say, or has been worn off. Can you use 120 in a 220 back.?

I would guess that you could use a different insert in the shell, but you cannot interchange film on a different insert. The thickness of 120 and 220 is different so the pressure plates are different. The film plane of 120 in a 220 insert would be too far forward.

PS no, inserts work with either 120 or 220 but can't operate with the other type film, the frame wind distance and frame counter relies on the thickness of the "film" for calibration, 120 thickness is film plus backing paper, 220 is film alone, so the wind distance and frame counting is not interchangeable.

The 6x7 shells for 120 and 220 are interchangeable, the carriage or insert should be marked 120 or 220 near the wind lever. Google is your friend here's a photo Dead Link Removed

Yeah...like i said, right next to the red mark on her back, it is just black, the number is worn of, broken, or whatever applies to these. Not sure how that number is attached.

If it is a 220 6x7 back, running a film through it will show on the frame counter frame numbers of 11, 12, 13, 14 etc. as you wind, whether or not the film is long enough (220) to include frames past #10.

If it is a 120 6x7 back, the frame counter will stop at 10.

If it is a 6x4.5 back - either 120 or 220, the frame counter numbers are different.

If it is one of the powered backs, they are 120 and 220 switchable.

If it is a 70mm back, all bets are off.

Just one suggestion for the OP (and others).

Thread titles are your friends.

Specific thread titles are your really good friends.

With all due respect, "Mamiya" doesn't give much of a clue to what you are asking about. Many people might not bother to check further. In particular if the thread title comes up because of a subject search.

Something like: "Mamiya RB67 SD backs - 120, 220 or both?" would be a lot better.

Yeah, i never considered the future Search/Archival aspect of thread titles...which i have definitely benefited from myself when i have searched for things.
