In the 1970's the Japanese made copies of Zeiss lenses that pushed the limits past what even many of the German samples could do.

I remember reading some place that these 100mm f2.8 Mamiya's could resolve up in the 90 lppm category. Don't hold me to that quote, I can't remember where I read it.

In any case, this was the flagship lens for the Mamiya Universal system of the late 1970's. It was an expensive upgrade from the 100 f3.5 Tessar that the camera came with. The 3.5 was no slouch, so it begged the question why you would buy one of these.

That is very likely precisely why these are hard to find now! This is the latest all black version, and the coatings, although no one was saying so yet, I believe may be multi-coatings. Where all of my older Mamiya lenses had straw colored coatings, this one has blues and pinks and purples and straw colors.
The glass seems to be perfect, and so does the shutter. It's running sweet. The only thing negative to report is a minor ding on the front filter ring. It's very tight, so I have installed a 72 - 77mm stepping ring that simply stays put.
