Mamiya KL 90mm Lens floating element question

Mamiya's 90mm KL lens for the RB67 has an adjustable element within. I Always thought the ring for the adjustable element was just a simple dof guide ring, since the RB focuses from the body.

Anyway, can anyone tell me how to properly use this adjustable element?
