Hello,

I'll try here too... On a whim I bought what looked like a very nice Mamiya C220f for a decent price, including paramender, 80/2.8 and a lens shade. There was only one little detail missing to make this perfect: the upper film spool knob.

After looking in the manual and trying several non-destructive ways to open the back without success, I've come to the conclusion that unless I am able to find a spare part, this is going to be the most expensive paper-weight I've ever bought. :sad:

Anybody knows if someone can supply the spare part or make a modification so that the camera works?

Is it likely that the C330 has the same part? If so then I can help as I have a defunct C330 which has already been robbed of a couple of parts for spares.

I can't really work out what you need from your picture though. Is it the little spring loaded bit which you pull out in order to get the reel in or out? If so, you might be able to get the C330 part to work although it doesn't quite look the same.

If your trouble is trying to open the back and if its the same as the C330, The knob/lever is on the top of the back door. You turn it then slide it to open it. The photo you submitted is of the side of the camera.
 
Im almost positive that im mis-reading your post but if you are trying to open it here is how the c330 opens. Turn the knob to the right and then slide the knob to the right. Here is a photo of the back door knob that opens the camera. Also i included a shot of the side, The knob to release the upper spool is spring loaded and you just pull it out to release.

Sorry,Forget my reply. The C220 and the C330 are completely different. Sorry about that!

Martin, I assume you are refering to the "Opening and Closing the back cover" page? Or is there something I am missing?
 
What I can see is that you are missing a knob that has te be pulled for changing the spool and has to be pushed for opening the back.
Pushing it in should not give a problem, pulling it to change the spool will.
Please check the exploded view of the C220 that I send to you for the partsnumber.

Yes, that's the page. It seems to me you could push down on the cover lock and then push the washer and screw towards the back of the camera and it should open. Unless I'm missing something.

FWIW, I read the instructions as saying that you should push down on the cover lock and then push the washer and screw into the camera body and then it should open.

It may be you need something smaller than your finger to push the washer and screw in.

Could the washer be too large?

The washer seems original, and no amount of pressure will budge the washer. Inside, "under" the washer, there is a linkage in the lower part of the hole which moves when I push down the cover lock. In the upper part, there is a moveable tap, but pushing the cover lock and simultaneously pressing the tap upwards affects nothing either. So far, I have not had any luck in finding any spare part, nor another 220 f.

From what I understand, it seems the C330 S has a similar knob arrangment, but I am not sure of this.
 
The C330S is the same - push down on the lever and then push the knob into the camera. As far as I can tell it is the outside rim of the knob that pushes into the camera and releases the back.

I'm afraid I can't really help you beyond that - this is the sort of thing the old mamiya user forums were good for *sigh*

Can you move the bottom knob to the top just to get the door open for now?
 
That's a good idea if you can work out how they come off - the ones on my c330s are (apparently) identical.

That said, I can't work out how they come off...
 
Also, have you tried depressing the silver disc (where the knob is supposed to mount) while moving the tap? It is possible that the tap is a lock for the back door release button that must first be moved by the rear side of the knob via a half depression in order to to allow the knob to be pressed in the rest of the way to open the door. IF this is the case, it would be to require positive motion by the user to open the back door, so it does not happen accidentally. My C220 is the older model, so I can't tell you for sure.
 
Thanks, then I know the C330s has the same setup, it helps a bit along the way. I tried to do the shuffle that 2F suggested but nothing happens while pressing the disc. Possibly, trying to turn it may get it to open, but I am unable to do this. I'd need three hands. :D
 
The C220f shares a lot with the C330s body. Unfortunately the latch is one of them, but that does give you a chance at a replacement. The C220f was not very common. It is a two stage process to unlatch the back, so it ought to be possible if you have access to the correct internal components.

It is going to be really tedious changing film if you cannot get it fixed.

Thank you, Graham. I've figured it wasn't very common. Just my luck, eh? :smile: I'll be looking for another C220f or C330s for spares. I have handled the camera a bit now and it feels like it's worth saving.
 
How about making one (or have it made) if it is just a knob.
I guess some one with a lathe could make one in aluminium for you in a matter of minutes........

Thanks for the tip about Mamiya in Germany, I'll try that too. Making a knob sounds interesting but I have no idea what it looks like. Unless someone was willing to take apart a 220 f to help me out, I am not sure it would be possible... But I am very grateful for every suggestion!
 
Right now, faffing about with the camera for the Nth time, trying to open the back, I finally figured it out. As any riddle, simple once you've solved it. The upper pin under the washer in the photo needs to be pressed into the camera, then pushing the plastic lever downwards.

Major breakthrough. :D
