I am using a Mamiya C220 Professional TLR camera which has the black 80mm f2.8 lens with a Seiko shutter. Based on published specifications and my measurement, I am almost certain the filter threads on the front of this lens are 46mm. I would like to use some b&w contrast filters on the taking lens (only). And, as a Pentax SLR owner, I have a good collection of 49 mm filters.

Has anyone tried using a 46mm-to-49mm step-up ring with this lens? Looking at the front of the lenses, I don't see any reason why this shouldn't work, but it would be nice to hear from someone who has actually tried this combination before I order the step-up ring.

Thank you.

Yes. I too went the step-up ring route to avoid the extra expense for my mamiya 220 f.

Although I believe that with some lenses the step-up ring may partially obscure the viewing lens.

I used an adapter to use 49mm on a Minolta TLR. Yes, the filter intruded into the viewing lens area. But I would see no actual effect. It probably reduced the aperture by 1/15 or some small small amount.

OP< hold a filter in front of your taking lens and see what happens. Heck, hold a 49mm lens cap and see if it affects the brightness of the viewing lens.

The adapter will work fine - but you may wish to get two, because you will need to use a different lens cap, and if you want to use a Mamiya lens cap that covers both lenses, the one that fits the 49mm filters needs two.
The cap designed for the 65mm lens works great.

Yes, it's a very good point about the lens cap.

The two adapters are also useful if you want to use matched polarizing filters with the camera.

I've used step-up rings in the past and stopped. Now I have so many filters in so many sizes, with the only advantage being no more lost/misplaced/in-my-other-camera-bag step-up rings. Too often I couldn't find the ring I needed at the time it was needed. The advice to buy a spare is good advice. Don't store them together unless you have a solid systems for keeping track of where they are.

Thanks to all who replied. I should have mentioned, I do not own this camera -- it was issued to me by a university photography department as part of a medium format class I am taking, and will be returned at the end of the semester. No lens caps were issued, so I don't have to worry about that.

Encouraged by the success of others, I've added the 46>49mm adapter to my shopping cart.

Good advice @BrianShaw. After trying to keep track of which filters and adapter rings I need in each of my 3 camera bags, I finally ended up buying separate sets of filters for my Fuji digital gear, my Pentax SLR kit, and my Konica SLR kit.
