Mamiya 7 with Nikon SB-25

Hi all

I am a novice when it comes to flash photography. I just picked up the SB-25 and need some guidance for shooting inside my low light apartment.

What I'm doing:

• Attaching flash to hot shoe and setting to AUTO
• Setting the Mamiya 7 to AE mode at f4
• The Mamiya 7 has the 65mm lens but I selected the "35mm" distance option on the flash (is this right?)
• The flash is pointed somewhat upright, not directly facing like the attached photo

What I'm wondering:

• Since the camera meter is displaying 2 or 4, will it be over exposed when the flash fires?
• Or will it be perfect?

I've only taken 2/3 photos of the roll so far and want to make sure it's not a complete dud when getting developed, will be out $20.

Do you have the manuals for the Mamiya 7 and the SB-25?
I wouldn't think that the AE mode on the Mamiya 7 would cooperate with the auto function on the flash. Most likely the AE meter in the Mamiya is setting a (slow) shutter speed that will fully expose the film without the flash, so the additional light from the flash will most likely cause you to over-expose the result. You need to set the aperture and shutter speed on the camera manually, based on the aperture setting recommended and set by the flash. F4 may be entirely appropriate, but f/8 may also be.
Looking at the SB -25 manual, it looks like page 81 is where you will find the instructions for the flash. It has the heading of:
Non-TTL Auto Flash Mode — Shooting with Various Lens Apertures.

You cannot use the Mamiya 7 in AE mode with a Nikon flash. Whet you do is manually set the shutter speed you want to use with flash (1/60 or 1/125 is fine for most lowight flash work). Then you set the Nikon flash to non-ttl auto mode. The SB-25 has a metering cell built in to give auto exposure with non-Nikon cameras (for a Nikon camera you would usually use TTL auto). Set the flash for the non-ttl auto mode, input the film speed you're using and choose an aperture. Set that aperture on the camera. Then take pictures!
