Mamiya 7 vignetting; Ilford SFX film question

I’ve been shooting the Mamiya 7 with 80mm lens for a long time but just started experiencing some vignetting. I had only one filter on it, orange. I did not have a lens hood. I bought a 3-RD party lens hood but it made it worse. The orange filter may have not been screwed in all the way. Could that have caused it?

I also have a question about pushing Ilford SFX film. Is this an appropriate place to ask about it?

I cannot answer the vignetting question, but rather than pushing SFX is very strongly recommend Rollei IR 400 which has much better IR responses with orange or red filters. I use R23 [some Wood Effect], R25 [good Wood Effect], R29 [strong Wood Effect], and R72 [strongest Wood Effect].

I use the 80mm on my Mamiya 7 extensively and with the Mamiya brand hood plus various filters. never, ever had a vignetting problem.

Shoot a roll with the various combinations on it and off it and you'll likely figure out the problem.

I'm guessing not, but are you using any UV filter below the orange filter?

I've noticed that anything beyond a slim UV filter may cause vignetting. When I purchased my 80mm lens, it did not come with the hood. I ended up buying a screw-mount collapsible hood, but when I added that to the UV filter, it caused considerable vignetting. I ended up screwing the hood on first, and then the UV filter, but I'm still noticing slight vignetting which I'm sure is coming from the filter, so I may have to rethink my strategy on that.

Thank you, bags27. I’m in the process of doing test rolls now. Can’t find a Mamiya lens hood for less than $200 sadly, so I’m trying other brands with varying degrees of success.

Assuming this is worst with the lens wide open, maybe you could get a thinner filter.
Looks like the front lens is already back aweighs from the front of the barrel it wouldn't take much more to cause vignetting.

Looking at pictures of the lens itself and the special Mamiya lens hood for it, I would guess that the lens barrel itself does half the job of shading the front element, and the lens hood needs to be quite wide and quite shallow.
I If I was going to try to fit something generis on it, I would be tempted to put something like a 58mm-67mm step-up adapter on first, and then 67mm filters and a wide and shallow hood on that.
That would most likely impede viewing and focusing though.

That’s exactly what I do with my 65mm and 80mm lenses. Those are the only ones in the Mamiya 7 family that take 58mm filters, the rest take 67mm. I only have to carry one size filter, albeit the 67s are slightly heavier than the 58s.

The larger filters do interfere with the viewfinder, but I’ve never found this to be objectionable, and of course this has no effect on the film image.

Thanks, Matt. I agree, I’ve never used a lens hood on this lens and I’ve had no issues with vignetting until recently. It may be that I was shooting in bright sunlight and my orange filter was not screwed in all the way. I found a wide, shallow generic hood 58mm. My test roll showed no vignetting with lens hood and UV filter but slight vignetting with orange and hood. Someone mentioned putting the hood on first and then the orange so I’ll try that next.

Actually the 210 takes a 58mm filter as well. So 3 take a 58 and 3 take a 67. Step-up ring most definitely!

The 210 a very, very funky lens, as it's not RF attached. Zone focusing all the way. i tried to take photos with it last night of the moon's total eclipse, but only managed a few of the partial eclipse before clouds covered it here in Rhode Island.

It's very cheap (~$250 on ebay), and, while I don't often use it, it gives some joy when I do.
