Mamiya 7 65mm lens with a step-up filter ring?

I have a Mamiya 7 with a 65mm lens and a 150mm lens. The 150mm takes 67mm filters while the 65mm takes 58mm (why can't companies standardize these things when there are only a few lenses for the camera? Argggh).

Is it possible to use a 58mm to 67mm step-up ring and just carry a 67mm filter set, or will this interfere with the lens hood?

Yes. I do it on the mamiya 6 -- also 58 to 67mm --with some of my filters. The 67mm is also used on two of my lf lenses. I use a thin stepup and it does not vignet.

Thanks. Does the hood still fit, or do you use a non-Mamiya hood?

Hood won't fit. You'll have to get a 67 mm hood to fit the larger filter.

I have the same system, and think it is wonderful that they limited their lenses to only two filter sizes. Some manufacturers use far more sizes.

because f4 on a 65mm lens has a diameter of 16.25mm and f4.5 on a 150mm lens has diameter of 33.33mm

so if your 65mm lens aperture diameter was the same as your 150mm lens, then it would be an f2 lens or thereabouts and would cost a **** load of money to design and make which you would also complain about.
Or they could make the 150 with only an f9 lens and guess what you would think about that.

So they can't win can they

Fact: fast tele lenses require big filter sizes.

Think how cool it would be to have an f/2 65mm on the 7 or 50 on the 6.

This is a partial thread-hijacking, but at least it's on point!

How ironic to stumble onto this thread--not five minutes ago I was online shopping for a ND filter for the Mamiya 7 range: the 50 and the 43 both use the 67mm filter; question is, do I need a slim or wide filter, or will the "normal" B+W F-pro (3mm thick I think) do the job without vignetting? And when I'm using the 67 filter on a 58-threaded lens with step ring, do I need to worry about vignetting due to the step ring itself?

You can open up the camera, put the lens in B mode, and fire the lens with something like a piece of ground glass over the film area to check for vignetting.

If in need of hoods, let me suggest the rb hoods, which are very inexpensive and fit standard filter threads. The 50/65 hood would seem best suited to wide work with a mamiya 7- as a travel feature, it kinda folds back a bit so you can use that in case you see some vignetting. I don't think the 50/65 hood will vignette though, it has something like a 77mm thread attachment circle, or maybe a bit larger. I can check if people are interested.

I use rectangular/square 100mm by 125mm (by 3mm thick I believe) ND grads on the Mamya 6 50mm with a filter holder that uses the 58 to 67mm step up ring. I don't think the filter thickness has any bearing, but others might know better.

Mike I don't know offhand whether you will see vignetting with that filter because I use sixes, but if so, what you can do is use a step up to a 77 or so and put a larger diam filter on. I have also been in the habit of just holding a larger filter over the lens, that's my cheap/low-class way of using a polarizer with my mamiya sixes.
