Depending on the T's & C's of the sale, the obvious suggestion is to return them, but I can understand there may be a reason why you'd want to persevere with it if it's fixable. You could try and see if they'd replace just the lens. I'd be wary of trying to fix it if it doesn't want to play.
I can't think why anybody would reverse the rabbit ears - as far as I'm aware, the AF versions would take the manual focus lenses but would only meter in stop-down mode (the connection is electronic rather than the rabbit ears on the AF bodies). I'd be wary of mounting the lens as it is as it may cause damage to the body or linkage.
