Mamiya 645 Pro film not advancing

Hello,

I just purchased a Mamiya 645 pro tl. I tried to load the film as mentioned in the manual and everything seems to be going well. But when I tried to advance the film to frame 1 it doesnt work and the crank is blocked. (I have tried with the dark slide in or out and the multi exposure is set to the white square normal).

I am able to get to frame one by shooting the film shot after shot. But after I get to frame one the counter doesnt advance at all. I can hear like a little pin when it hit frame one on the counter but after that the film wont advance even though the shutter still cocks and fire.

I had a problem with the multiple exposure switch on my Mamiya 645 Super was for some reason staying on. Visually checking it seemed to be set right but it was not. I turned it to multi and back to the white square several times and there was a click and I knew it was engaged properly then. Try that if you have not already.

Yeah, I suspect the multi exposure switch too. There is something a little quirky about if there's no film in the camera it has to be switched to "multi" to advance the film/cock the shutter, but if there is film in the camera it has to be switched to the single shot position. It's not intuitive, but there IS a mechanical reason, the way the gears interface when there is film in the camera or something. At least on the 645S.

Thank you to both of you for answering.

I still havent got any solutions. I have tried another back and there is still the same issue.

I am stuck at the S (start) position straight after I load the film. Nothing happens and the manual cranck is blocked. If I take the dark slide out I can fire a few times but whenever i hit frame 1 on the back counter, it stops. I can hear a click and from there the film wont advance at all.

Well I have a manual advance crank, not the powered one.

When i load the film, the advance crank doesnt move, it is stuck in position and I cannot move forward to the frame one. It is literally blocked. It is meant to move freely until it reaches the frame one (straight after loading the film).

You have a problem with the safety interlocks.
The body thinks the film is in the back waiting for the exposure.
Do you have another back you can try, to see if the problem is particular to the back?

Yes I have tried with a different back as I have another one that someone lent me. The problem is still there.

Do you think it is on the body that the problem is coming from? I really dont know anymore.

I've had three 645 Pro(TL) bodies die on me over the last few years. On two of them the shutter died, and on the other, the exact same thing you are experiencing. I couldn't figure it out so it just became another parts body in my bin. The bodies are cheap enough that its worth just buying another one (or two). Prices are going up slightly over the course of the last year or so. Maybe worth getting two so you aren't paying more for one later when it dies.

It might sound like I'm complaining about them but I'm not - they are lightweight and great for when I want a smaller medium format set-up and don't want to use the Hasselblad 500c. Most recently I took my 645 Pro TL with me for 4 days of hiking at Cuyahoga Valley National Park two weeks ago and shot several rolls.

That's a beautiful image, Jeremy. I love those old poured concrete bridges and am constantly looking for them as I go about my day to day. Last week I was down in Austin and there are a few of them crossing the Colorado River down there. We had a nice one here in Olympia until it got damaged in the earth quake in 2001.

There's a really great one just outside Sequoia National Park a little east of Visalia, CA, too. One in Modesto.

But that one of yours, reflected, and with fall colors...freaking gorgeous.
