Hello,

I have got my hands on a Mamiya 645 1000s which has not been used for a while. Everything seems to work properly except for one thing: According to the documentation, when loading the film, the crank should turn freely to advance the film to frame 1 and freely wind the film after frame 15 (at least when 120 film is selected). Is that correct?

On the camera I am using, when the film insert is in the camera, whatever the position of the counter, the crank only turns one turn and cocks the shutter as well as advances the film 1 frame. The only way to advance the film further is to fire the shutter. The counter works as it should, it resets to S when inserting the film and then advances by the right amount. I am able to shoot with the camera by firing the shutter 5 or 6 time in order to get the counter to 1 when loading the film. When the counter reaches 15, it stops and I have to wind/fire the shutter a number of times to get all the film and paper on the take up spool.

The issue for loading the film is a bit annoying but not really a big deal but at the end of the roll, the documentation mentions that the end of the paper could jam in the shutter curtains so it is probbaly not a good idea... I could unload the camera in a dark bag but that starts to be quite cumbersome

Have any of you experienced something similar? Any idea if it is fixable?

BTW, when the film insert is not in the camera, the cranks turns one turn to cock the shutter and then turns freely. I suppose that this is what should happen before frame 1 and after frame 15...

Cheers,

Franck

The multiple exposure should be in the vertical position (off). It seems a bit odd though that if this was indeed in multiple exposure that the frame number would advance on the side. It could have to do with some internal gearing being off but I am not very well versed in the specific mechanics unfortunately.

my mamiya works as stated in the documentation you quoted - with or without the darkslide in... sounds like a gearing problem of some sort? maybe a bent/broken safety?
never had any sort of problem like this so i'm only guessing - good luck.

Hello,

Thanks for your replies. It make sense that it could be a problem in the gearing between the frame counter and the winding mechanism. So far I have not found much description on how it is supposed to work but I have found a service manual for it so I'll have a look at it to see what kind of information it contains.

Cheers,

Franck
